I'm 45, and back into lifting. Never did it serious as a kid, but did a little,...Been a good two years now. I have had some ups and some downs,..but all in all, I have made some good progress as far as I can tell,..
I have a number of issues, but I'm curious how long it takes for some of the other old lifters, to recover. Trying to get an idea if I'm expecting too much from myself,..I know everybody is different, but in general, I'm just curious. It's really wearing on me. I lift hard while in the gym,...I don't mess around. Try to keep the intensity high, and get it done,...
I'm sure it doesn't help that I have been cutting the past few months, but lately, I just can't seem to get out of a rut.
Thanks all,..>>>--->

I recover very fast, my workouts are intense, and generally last two to 2.5 hours. Part of this is ensuring that there is a good mix in the lifts - heavy this workout, high reps next workout. I don't go more than 3 days in a row straight, and I keep my diet clean, and try and get plenty of sleep. For me, sleep is a bigger part of it than all the others.

Recovery depends on a lot of things. If I do squats once per week I'm sore for 2 full days afterward. However, if I do squats twice or 3x per week....I'm never sore for more than a matter of hours. This is just one example to consider when defining/comparing recovery time. I didn't workout at all until about 5yrs ago, so it'd be hard for me to compare. But if I did workout in my 20's/30's...I probably would have a hard time trying to accurately compare recovery due to a slew of variables. But in the past 5yrs, it [i]seems[i/] that I recover much quicker now than I did a few years ago. Personally, I don't believe age has much to do with it.

My friend, 45 is a young whippersnapper! I am the old fart! I am going on 61. However, I begin my workouts with a 4 mile walk/run on a treadmill, doing fartlek (intervals) sprints and elevated inclines (up to 30%) or a rigorous elliptical workout with poles for forty-five minutes and immediately go into a whole body weight training workout using pairs of 70-90 pound dumbells for most exercises. My recovery is excellent regardless of age and without the assistance of any drugs. In other words I can train most days of the week at an intensity level of approximately 85% and recover very rapidly.

Thanks for the replies guys,..
I must have dug myself a hole again, as I just can't seem to get a handle on feeling well these days. I eat clean, and train hard. try to get plenty of rest, not so easy at times,..but I'm not running on 4 hours or anything like that. Maybe 7 in general,.and of course up two to three times a night to the bathroom. Pre, Post, workout nutrition seems in check,..I'm going to up my daily calories for a while and try to feed myself a bit better.
I wish I could find a doctor that you could have do a once over on all the usual suspects, to get a complete check up,...Seems you have to be just short of dead, in order for a doctor to notice these days. I suppose it's the nature of the business now, but it makes it difficult to try and figure things out, if your problems aren't right at the surface,...

I'm on a 5 day PM routine w/3 AM cardio sessions. To be honest, I don't think I'm getting the recovery I need right now with only two full days off. I credit whey shakes and meal replacements for giving me the strength to continue at my current pace.
To answer your question: Longer than I would like :-)

Thanks again for the continued response guys,..
I do use creatine mono,...It's creapure, so it's micronized. I have used CEE in the past, and had mixed results with it,..Could try it again,..Seemed I had some wierd side effects from it before, but it could have been just the product I was using. Are you thinking water retension? I have always had issues with a small bladder. can't seem to hold my water too well, if I'm really drinking a lot.
I don't drink milk any longer. Once in a great while, and only a small amount. I'm diabetic, so that's one of the things that went a few years back,..I love milk too,...
I have an apointment with my uroligist next week. I'm on Hormone Replacement Therapy, but as mentioned before, it seems if there isn't something black and white, at the door, screeming in their face, the doctors just don't apear too interested in helping figure out what's going on. I'm really frustrated,...
Thanks again guys,...>>>--->

45 is not "old fart"
You are going to have to wait and work up to old fart! At 45 I was going at it 5 or 6 days per week, serious lifting, one body part per day with an hour of cardio.
Everyone is different but you will have to push yourself to find out where you are and just try different routines. But just have fun and enjoy it for sure!Ian L. Sitren
