I would have thoguht it would be a little more... I look at some martial artist like Frank Shamrock or Ken I think it was Ken and he benched 450 inclined on heavy days... and hes not a big guy. He works out for endurance. So arnold with his size should have been able to do a little more then that.. its still amazing weight tho. I gota give him that.
    Stats:

    Height: 5"10

    Squat - 1rM = 315lbs
    Deadlift - 1rM = 315lbs (goal was 3 plates and got there)

total = 815 (goal for next christmas is 1100)

The way Arnold trained is very different from the average bodybuilder trains today-don't expect them to be similar.

its still bodybuilding... when they benched 30 years ago... it was the same as they bench today... how does it vary... they might have had different routines an techniques back then.. but its not an excuse.

Emphasis on training in general and supplementation. Comparing Arnold and today's bodybuilders is like Apples and Oranges. They are totally different.

I dont take supps and im sure lots of people smaller then Arnold have benched more. It's also not an excuse but i will take a look at his training as soon as you find it for me. I think he juiced too much and had too much muscle and too little strenght. Someone with a natural physique like that could bench well over 450lbs.

    My opinion.

To tell you the truth, in my opinion, He weighed too little for competition. About his juicing, he would stop awhile before competition came around to avoid being bloated. But you know how people feel now adays, more is better. Arnold regrets that he started so young in juicing but that was the mentality he was raised on at that time. He will always be my favorite no matter if Ronnie Coleman wins a million times.

PS-FOr his training (If you want to follow it to the "T") Read his Bodybuilding Enclypedia. It's a good read. They also have some of his training on this website.

I don't think Arnold gave a **** how much he could bench. He was a BODYBUILDER not a power lifter. He never trained for strength, he trained for mass. So I am sure he could have benched a lot more, but like I said he didn't care how much he could max. True bbers don't max anyway.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

If you could bench 600+lbs would you... or would you just bench 450lbs? I think he could max higher then 450 but he repped it. He obviously cared what he benched... I have to agree with you... if you can do 450lbs and get nice mass he would do that rather then struggle with little more weight. But he could have pushed himself a little more.

Good post d-money. Yeah, bodybuilders should be concerned with the inches and definition, not the amount of weight they are lifting.

Seriously. And a lot of you guys on here are throwing around all these "facts" like you actually know them. It's true that he benched 450 for 8 reps, but can you guys give me the links to the other info you guys threw out there? Such as saying that Arnold stopped using roids right before competition? When did he say this? Give me a link and I'll believe that this is a fact that your saying.

Good for you if you don't take supps. I hope your proud of yourself. This is bodybuilding, supps are supposed to be taken. And there are people smaller than Arnold that have benched more, they're called powerlifters. And the funniest line you gave was about too much juice making him have little strength. Since when is 450X8 too little strength? And who the **** told you that steroids make you weaker? And good luck looking like Arnold naturally.

The autobiographies written by Arnold tells about his juicing strategies (and sexcapades) including stopping before contest. Do your self a favor, go to a book store or search the web like amazon.com

arnold wasnt about how much he could bench. he was looking for overall chest mass and symmetry. He focused on weak point training until he had developed a perfect outer and upper chest to go along with his lower and inner chest. he said that his upper chest was his weak point.

Why would he push himself more and risk injury? His chest was too big for the rest of his body anyway.

Besides, he did a bodybuilding routine, not a powerlifting one. If he cared then he would have done a powerlifting routine.

    My opinion.
Of course, because someone can get Arnold's physique naturally

    Gotta add:

And of course juice doesn't cause strength gains

I never use and you just made me use it 3 times. Congradulations.
So close to 10k, green is my favorite color nom saiyan?

He will always be my favorite no matter if Ronnie Coleman wins a million times.

PS-FOr his training (If you want to follow it to the "T") Read his Bodybuilding Enclypedia. It's a good read. They also have some of his training on this website.
You have to realize back then he was huge for bodybuilders. Even now if you compare pictures of arnold to current bodybuilders they dont look much better. I just wanted to state the times, and for them he was plenty heavy enough.

    Unhappy Catching up I guess.

    I'm 6'4 and weigh 330 pounds. I can only bench 405 7 times. I feel so inadequate.

    edit-holy bump balls
Suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret! We must train from the inside out. Using our strengths to attack and nullify any weaknesses. It’s not about denying a weakness may exist but about denying its right to persist.
