Hewn from a dream
My 6'3", 200 lb bouncer/MMA friend will kill me tomorrow . . .
I start MMA training tomorrow with my friend who's a bouncer and MMA fighter. Should be interesting. He's 6'3", about 200 lbs, and me . . . I'm 5'7", 150 lbs. Maybe after a few months training with him, I will be able to handle most guys my own size--no problem. Er, that's the hope, anyway.
Any tips from MMA fighters?

just don't give up. You might feel like you suck and not making any progress sometimes because you keep getting your ass kicked and keep tapping out but you'll get better.

I am 5'7 165lbs. Learn to work in close. You may wanna learn some grappling. (Your shortness will be an advantage for grappling and GnP).
Don't let his size intimidate you. A lot of smaller guys loose the fight mentally before any blow is struck.
Learn how to manipulate people, just because they are larger/stronger doesn't mean they will over power you. Learn to use your lower center of gravity to your advantage.

Hmm. I guess I failed to mention that I have no MMA experience whatsoever.

I agree with the above posters. My first day in my gym...I learned the basics then went right into sparring, got my ass kicked...continuously. Two weeks later, my trainer put me up against a guy similiar to Bob Sapp...(yes serious)(yes got my ass knocked the **** out). But it helped me in the long run, the only way to get better at fighting is to fight...which is why I do very little "fluff" stuff as I call it. I spar for pretty much all my training sessions, besides stretching, warming up, doing some bag work...
EDIT: No experience doesn't really matter, just go in with an open mind and be willing to learn from any mistakes...hell, he might slip up or you might just be naturally better than you think you are. Good luck!

yo i was i the sam shoes as you were.
my school had an mma club and i was easily the smallest guy and let me tell you...you will get ur ass handed to you on a daily basis. and it will be the point where submissions on huge guys are really hard to be performed and your like, am i doing something wrong??
but then when u roll with someone ur own size, itll be way more beneficial

lol, learning from a 6'3" 200 lb will be no fun, I have hard time when I roll with 6' 200 lb blue belts. he'll get triangle so easily on you with those long limbs.

Better to spar VS bigger guys because if a situation arises and you need to defend yourself chances are it will be VS someone bigger then you.
If they are beating you its because they are better then you skill wise. You can't make yourself grow taller but you can make yourself stronger, faster, and more skilled then the other guy.
You hardly ever see a 5'7 guy beating a 6'+ guy because the fights just don't happen that often. However there are fights with 6' guys fighting guys that are like 7' tall and winning. Size is important but it doesn't make you loose by default.

I can hardly compare myself to the guy, but Rocky Marciano is my inspiration.

My buddy is built a lot like Liddell. He's not HUGE, but is fairly solid.
And, no, I am only comparable to Marciano in that I am short. (But even he had two or three inches on me.) I really admire the guy. I've watched video of him knocking guys twice his size on their ass for the ten count.

Find out where you buddy is comfortable and dont go there!!!
if hes a grappler - punch and kick him and move alot.
if hes a standup guy - take him down!

Are you just training with him; or are you going with him to a school/ club? It will be great workout for you, but I don't see how the workout will be benificial to him. Is this one of those.... " hey bro, can you show me a couple of things so I know how to handle my self " or do you really want to start training full time?
Either way I'm sure you'll have a great time. Fight sports are a lot of fun.

Train Hard Or Go Home
it takes time......
....but if your buddy & the coaches there are good you will notice amazing improvement asap!
my gym, team viper, in inverclyde, scotland, was started by judo blackbelts, a thai boxer & greco roman wrestler. the wrestler is huge! but the other 3 arent.
as it aint popular in greenock, the only people that really went the first two years were 200lbs+ bouncers! my coach always goes on about how he taught me what a boxing glove was, thts how bad i was!!!!!!!!
what helped me was:
1. vs guys with superior skill. you learn as you tap!
2. vs bigger guys. you develop grappling strength {strength you cant get with weights}, position awareness {like knowing how to escape/ advance positions}
3. getting a beatin. trust me, each time you improve your buds will up their game against you. you feel like your getting no-where. BUT when a new guy comes in, you are head and shoulders above him. sounds bad compatring against the new guy, but thats the best comparrison for improvement.
stick with it.......

rocky marciano was trained by my grandmother's cousin (serious). hes one of my favorites also.
honestly, i think this will be a good opportunity for you to train with a larger guy. it will deffinitly get your strength up and used to a person with a longer reach.

Consider it a good opportunity. Don't try to "beat" your big buddy. Try to learn from him and get a heavy workout.
I'm 6'3" and 230. The guys that I teach and train with that are smaller, learn a lot from me, as I have seven years of experience. Also, they get used to training with a big guy and lose their intimidation, and have no problem handling guys their own size.
The biggest factor in it all is technique. Size isn't very relevant if the big guy doesn't have the technique. I've rolled with many many guys larger than myself, as big as 6'10" and 300 lbs., and have had no problem beating them if they were short on technique or stamina.
If you are ever in my area, S. Cal./San Diego, you are welcome to get in touch and join me on my mats for some training.
Good Luck.

better believe it... we had some 250lb sauce bag in the gym.." ill take any one additude.. 3 take downs to a kneebar, heel hook, and an ankle lock" guy was reaching his big muscles for an inhaler saying how cool this stuff is... size is a mental thing the bigger they are the harder they fall.. from little go point of veiw many big sauce bags DO NOT like getting hit. now if he is trained and you are not.. if hes not a dick you will learn alot from him and get alot stronger without getting gym muscles

If I ever got in the ring with an experienced MMA fighter like Randy Couture I would immediately assume the fetal position and cry. Or I'd pretend to be a woman in hopes that he has some chivalry.
