If you have a day where you are drinking normally, but peeing like a race horse, and next morning, you find you've dropped 3 or more pounds, that's you shedding the water weight as you enter ketosis. You'll gain it back on carb-up and drop it again afterwards.
You'll probably develop your own personal way of telling, like a taste in your mouth, the smell of your urine, or a change in energy levels. I only ever do non-essential housework like hoovering when I'm in ketosis.
