What is a good GPA to graduate college with?

Hey guys, I'm a computer engineering major. I was wondering if graduating with a GPA of a 3.6 is bad? Am I going to have trouble finding a good job?

My Dad is really pissed off because he wants me to get atleast a 3.8 cumulative. I jacked up some semesters, so I am HOPEFULLY going to graduate with a 3.6. I am very very depressed about this, and have contemplated some nasty things. He says I'm pathetic and am going to be a bagger at Food Lion. Right now I have a GPA of 3.4 (going to start my Junior year after summer), but I can HOPEFULLY get A's and A-'s for the remaining semesters to bring it up to a cumulative of 3.6. Am I screwed? Please answer honestly. I don't want anybody holding in how much I'm screwed or something because I'll feel sad. Thanks.

3.6 isn't bad. I know a few kids at my college that are freaking happy with 3.0, but this is because they waste all their time boozing and having a fun time. And we all know college is supposed to be spent studying!

I'll let you in on a little secrete. My internship in boston and i got to work with the head of HR. They cared very little about gpa, they would laught at some of the ones from schools such as harvard because they know the gpas are inflated. Best bet for landing a good job is your connections, they are what make or break your job finding abilities unless you are in a highly recruited field.

    Most GPAs are inflated anyhow..

Getting a 3.5 at UofT is almost unheard of.

I graduated with a 3.23 overall 3.56 major GPA in Engineering from OU. That was tough and I studied a lot. I accepted a job with a big oil company before I started my last semester. If you didn't have a 3.0 forget getting a job.

I had a great internship with the company, and they asked me to stay on until i graduate and leave to get my MBA. Getting your foot in the door is the hardest part once that is done all you have to do is impress them. The field also helps as not many in my area are going into economic forecasting.

I would say your set with above a 3.0... I mean I had a GPA of 3.5 in my first fall semester of college, but thats because I had only 3 classes, but I took 5 classes (16 credits) this Spring and I think my GPA will dip down to 3.2 because at worst, my grades are one C, three B's, and one A. I hope for companies, its all about how long you go to college and consistently keep up those good grades... and take it all in stride.

Do any of your colleges give a 3.7 for an A-? At my school you have to get over a 94% to get a 4.0, otherwise it's a 3.7

But that doesn't make any sense. Isn't what you've done in college measured by your GPA? Thus, employers would look at that to get an idea of what type of worker you are. Someone with a GPA of 2.0 wouldn't even be considered for a job since he will most likely slack off whereas someone with a GPA of 4.0 would get a job ANYWHERE since he pretty much does A work. Is my thinking skewed?

If I am looking to get into marketing, like sales and advertising and what not, what kind of GPA should I strive to get? Obviously I will get as high a GPA as I can but I'd like a general idea.

Your thinking and your dad's thinking is completely wrong. GPA is good for getting into a good graduate school, thats about IT. If a company likes you, and feel you qualify they will not care about your GPA, bottom line. A good GPA will not get you hired also automatically. A company looks at your application ooo nice a 4.0 GPA, he is hired immediately, do you actually believe this?

Graduate schools vary drastically. Some want high GPAs, some look at GRE scores - most, a combination of both. Not to mention letters of recommendation from professors/graduate students in your field. If you're interested in graduate school I highly recommend you talk with your advisors, get to know your professors really well, join any academic fraternity organizations, etc. What people don't realize is that the post-degree competition is huge.

Typically to be safe, aim for a 3.6+. Your grade average is important but it's direly important to be well-rounded in your area of study. Do some research (either on or off the internet) and get ahead of the game.

    I'm at 3.2.

The higher your GPA the more your boss expects you to kiss his ass since you get a high GPA by kissing your professor's ass.

How would a firm know that a 4.0 gpa student is more merited then a 3.0 gpa student? Just based on the difference of their overall scores? There's more to it then that. You're presuming a falsehood.

I'm not saying it has no bearing, it's just not the be-all and end-all of your life.

My college gives out a 3.7 for an A- and a 3.3 for a B+. I hate how that is set up but whatever. I think a GPA is 3.25 to 3.5 is good and anything above that is great.
