why does ON protein powder make me tired?

Back in November i switched from nitro tech to ON to save some money. I stopped after 3 days because it made me extremely tired. After i stopped it my energy levels returned to normal. A few weeks ago i went back on it and i've noticed once again i am getting tired. I haven't had it in a few days and my energy levels are normal. This pretty much confirms that it makes me tired but i'm not sure why. Any guesses?

    Unhappy i feel your pain

dumac, i know you posted thyis thread like....2million years ago. But i just couldn't not reply to it.

I have exactly the same problem with taking protien shakes. Before any of you smart arses try and make a crazy speculation or percieve me as a hypocondriact i'll answer your thoaghts before you get the chance to reply to me lol.

Im not slumping from sugarary food/drinks as i dont have them. (very rare if i do)
    I consume enough carbs
    I consume enough protien foods
im not a crazy ass attention seeker or what ever!

Fistly I have trained on and off for about 5-6 years. I trained consistantly for about 3 years consistantly and religiously out of the total 5-6 years ive trained, The remainder of my training has been on and off for various reasons, one including a sliped disc.

Obviously from when i 1st started out i was obviously lacking in knowlage and technique, therefore through trial and error i found out what worked and what didn't. One of the mistakes i made was taking a particular all in one protien shake for way too long without adequate rest periods (nearly 15months!!!,ouch) Although the results we're very good and my physique was very good at the time, i didn't realise that this would of caused me one of the most fundimental problems that would affect me up until this day (nearly 4 years later)

a personal trainer that worked in the gym (after a year or so he became a good friend of mine) told me to come off the protien for health reasons aswell as building an immunity/ressistance to the protien shake. Which i did.

    ANYWAY

After nearly 15 months of taking the all in one protien ( maximuscle cyclone) i started to feel a bit under the weather. within a week of coming off the cyclone all in one shake i started taking reflex whey protien for around a further 2.5 years with rest gaps and swapping from whey to instant mass every 4-5 months ( i used to take double servings of the whey, around 5-6 servings per day). During this time i still had bouts of feeling tired and lethagic.

After this time my tarining slowed down for varios reasons which concluded with me not needing to consume protien shakes. I had around a 9 month break from training. After my 9 month rest, i become itchy to train again. So i did, of course i went back on the protien. I started the all in one shake (maximuscle cyclone) after afew days to a week i noticed i felt very lethagic, tired and weak. I carried on with the shake up until it become unbarable to cope with the exhaustive feelings. I seen my g.p for advice but to no productive avail!!!. So i decided to go natural whilst training by consuming only food and milk as opposed protien shakes. I noticed an immediate improvment.

So after concluding the cyclone didn't suit me anymore and having a 2 month de tox from protien shakes i started back on whey protien, And again after a short period of time i noticed i became a little tired and lethargic. I suspected that itwas the shakes, but i carried on with them. My symtoms persisted until they become worse with time. So inevitably i stopped the protien shakes once again.

Since coming off reflex with having adequate rest from protien shake i experimented with different brands and types of protien shakes. All of which inevitably caused me to feel crap again. No matter what protien i take i feel crap!! when i come off the protien shakes i feel better!! Its not fair, as they are so convienient and good for muscle development.

I have done extensive reaserch on this topic and have noticed many of other people have expierienced the same issue as me and you dumac. So your not alone mate.

My only option these days are i can only eat normal foods and milk to support my training gains. which is'nt bad really as its all natural a better for me. Its just alot harder to do with a busy working / famialy life.

So again just to remind you, YOUR NOT ALONE. if any folks reading this finds that thier feeling tired or lethargic after taking protien shakes, esspecially all in one shakes then come off them, You may have a intolerance to them, I found out from a health specialist one can build a intolerance to anything, literally anything even after prolong use that does'nt intially cause any side effects. One can develop side effects over time. Which seems to coinside with my story. Even if your ok with somthing one minuite your body can reject it a minuite later... and thats a medical FACT.

    ANYWAY

ive woffled on enough lol. Ihope this can answer any of your questions that relate to this thread.

    Peace and love.. liam

Maybe you have an allergy to milk products...try a pure whey isolate and see if it makes a difference...it might be a problem w/the casein...milk is both whey and casein...

Old thread but the same thing has been happening to me. I had stopped taking any whey supplements/protein supplents for the last 6 months and then just started again a couple weeks ago.

Usually I will take two scoops of ON gold in the morning and that is it for the day, the next morning though I am absolutely dead tired and the alarm is barely getting me up at 4:00am now.. It's so bad that I thought my fan next to the alarm clock was the clock , I was messing with it for about 5 minutes trying to hit the snooze button on the fan :-(

IS there something I'm allergic to in whey protein? It's seems pretty odd that 24hrs later it will still effect me like this after the last dose. I do remember this happening all the time back before I quit also. I know it has a little tryptophan but not enough to do this to me

Any other options other than whey protein?
