How much weight is needed for the anabolic effect of squats?

Hello, this is my first post. I'm a pretty average guy not a big builder or anything. I have always had rather large legs from bicycling, running, carrying heavy weight etc. A couple of years ago I turned 30 and realized I could either build my upper body now or probably forget about it so I got on it. Since then I have gained 30lbs total. Anyway I have actually always enjoyed squatting. Yes, I know I hear the people say they are hard etc. However being able to throw up 300lbs from the floor my first year in was just fun and downright cool. I worked on increasing it till I hit 500 and ran out of weights. I ended up injuring one foot and knee when I fell one night(not working out or anything just slipped). I slowly worked my way back up in weight and a friend found out how much I was doing he said I shouldn't do more than 300lbs that it was dangerous beyond that. I'm back upto 400 without any knee or ankle pain till I hit 450. I was wondering if doing lower weight on squats would still give me the anabolic effect I want for my upper body or should I stick to high weights and is there a cap I should seriously consider for safety? I know my uncle squats well over 500 and he is 50 and in excellent shape. I've read alot of posts on it but couldn't find anything to indicate whether doing a low weight like 300 would still create the anabolic effect I want or if there was some kind of safety cap I should watch out for. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

squats are such an effective excercise they work in any rep range

some say 4-6 some say 15, some say 20.

Tom Platz used to take 315 and squat it 50 times!

as long as their taken to faliure the same anabolic efect would be acheived i think.

maybe look up "20 rep squats" and give that a go, you'll probably need to significantly lower the weight

I found the value of a spotter yesterday...

I have a powerrack, so it's not like I'm going to die without one, but I showed my wife how to help if I fail and having the confidence boost of someone really helped. I pushed out 4 more reps on my last set than I had been doing cuz I knew I could rerack it

Sorry for the detour. I don't think there's ever been a study that can answer your question.

This is precisely how i aquired a mid 400 lb squat in such little time.

If only people werent so afraid to squat weight that's heavy for them and use the benefit of a spotter to move past failure.

How much weight did you do on the 20 reps?

My goal is 20 with 315. I need to build up my strength so I can do 10 with 315 without them being too hard, then 20 from here.

It was prolly 5-6 months back. I think the number was 245. It was after heavy working sets, which wasnt the smartest of ideas.

Platz mentions in his book he'd work up to a fairly difficult low-medium rep set (8 reps or so) over 5-6 sets and then with a lighter wright do 30 non-stop consecutive reps, ie. no rest at top.

Pssshhh... 20 reppers are easy. Try a 30 rep squat sometime.

Whenever you did high reps how did that affect the workouts afterwards, ie. the leg day after a high-rep leg day?

Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

Well I assume you do the 20+ rep sets kinda improv and I am asking you how they affected your next leg workout. Say after you did 20 with 315, how did you feel in terms of strength and stamina the next leg workout.

I don't think it does much for strength in terms of 1RM, but it sure does increase your stamina and endurance. High reps seem to work better for me for building leg size.

    Okay let me rephrase...

Some months ago out of the blue I did some 20 rep workouts with 243 lbs. Following these workouts my legs felt "overtrained" - tired.
Ever felt this way after high rep squats?

No, not really. My leg workouts are always extremely high volume, so I'm probably just used to it.

    MINIMUM DEPTH NEEDED!

A guy that can honestly squat five plates is a bit of a monster; I would expect you to be able to deadlift around 600 if you could squat that much to depth.
