2 cans of tuna a day - Mercury?
So I eat about 2 cans of tuna a day, I'm scared that it might be a little too much on terms of mercury. Will I be alright? Have any of you eaten this much for a period of time?

60g of protein a week from tuna? That's kind of minimalistic isn't it?

Yeh, but the mercury content is not minimalistic.
Canned tuna is convenient, but there are other sources of protein if you are worried about high mercury.

Have you actually done research or read up on mercury poisoning?
It's not enough to take some cocky-ass attitude like "I'm a BB'er so I can eat whatever and not worry about potential toxins"
My guess is that we are all too young to show effects from mercury poisoning.
Give it a few years, who knows?

It depends on the area they catch the fish. Look it up, there are some heavy metal extracting projects that happen, and this lowers the amount of mercury in the fish.

WOW, you Dad's a Nutritionist- By any chance, did he know Einstein??? Really though Mate, just because he's a Nutritionist, doesn't mean he can tell a whole organization they're wrong.
On a side note, I myself eat 2 can a day, with no problem. I just didn't agree with the "My DadSz a NuTrIonIzt, Zo heza GeNiUz" line...

My tuna is from the Philippines.. and on the can it says 'Dolphin Safe' and there's a picture of a dolphin with a big cross on it. What the hell? Anyways, anyone have an idea of how much mercury it is in there?

I imagine the same sorts of things were said before asbestos was discovered to be toxic, or that glowsticks had harmful chemicals, or that old cellphone technology wasn't so hot.
Anyway, I think the biggest concern is fetal exposure to mercury. Apparently, that can really screw you over.
I would be an advocate of caution; yeah, I usually eat a can of chunk light tuna a day. But I will definitely stop if/when definitive data come out to prove that mercury intake over the reccommended safe levels is hazardous.
I read through some of the other tuna/mercury threads...they seem kinda like this one? Inconclusive (more or less).

Most likely it's bred on a fish farm. The Dolphin logo means that they have a way of not risking killing Dolphins, like some major plants used t do, the Dolphins would get caught in nets, and couldn't get away.

selenium gets rid of the excess iron and copper from your foods and it does the same thing with mercury so if your getting enough of it you should be fine.

lol tuna safety is wayyy overrated. i would eat 3-4 cans a day. very good for you. tell your doctor you eat fish 3x a day. he will commend you, the positive effects for your heart outway the bad mercury poisoning (which i have never seen in my life) i know someone who eats 4 cans a day and is in perfect shape

So if it's grown on a fish farm, that means no mercury risk too, correct?

The cancer won't show in two years. And I bet you haven't had kids recently.
The reason why the FDA has reccommendations is because mercury poisoning and exposure can be harmful. They don't just imply regulations and standards for the hell of it, there is science to support it.

I really don't know about that one.
Seems as though it would, unless it's just something that's in the fish.

lol. Yea, right, and you shouldn't be eating excess amounts of protein because you're a bodybuilder, or working out over 4 times a week as it's overtraining.
There's been a lot of discussion on mercury levels. I would say 1 can a day is fine, but limit it to 4 a week. A lot of it is overrated hype that the media portray to stop health accidents. Find me some figures that show over a 1,000 people a year in the USA dying of mercury.
Don't sweat it. Eat your tuna, but in moderation.
