oh man... I can actualyl help you on this one. Before spring break, I couldn't swim 10 laps to save my life. Now, I swim 34 laps (25m lanes = a mile + 2 extra laps) 3 times a week, one of which right in the morning. Swimming is excellent. I have dropped bf% pretty consistently, while retaining my mass. When I went back to runnign one day, mile time.... it dropped about 2 minutes. Make sure you do it right, ie... work on breathing (head underwater, and turn head to breathe blah blah blah) because if you don't... it makes it nearly impossible to swim long distances without neck pain + plus keepign your head down actually makes it easier. I would DEFINENTLY reccomend this. I am not an expert, but from experience, this has definently helped me out big time. I have the worst case of add ever, and i CANNOT run because tis SO boring. Swimming is pretty fun, and I still haven't gotten "bored" of it yet. hopefully it works out for you, because it SURE as HELL has for me.

it is excellent especially when leg day has your quads etc. sore and you can't run. I did run often and when I started to swim, I felt so out of shape. It is tough! You get a great cardio workout without the stress on your joints and without sweating and stinking.

Here's a site where you could check calories burned for random activities (shoveling snow etc.)
