It isnt common. If you get organic and/or cage-free eggs, the risk is much, much lower. I would say virtually non-existent.

You won't get E. coli from eggs, maybe Salmonella. Assuming you have a normal immune system, if you did ingest some Salmonella you might take an extra dump that day and that would be it. You would really have to ingest a lot of Salmonella to get really sick and for all the bigger one contaminated egg would be you will likely not even know if you ingest it.
An important point to remember is that the inside of a raw egg is sterile, only the outside can potentially be "dirty". If you are careful how you crack it and drop it in you're good to go.
I eat six raw eggs a day... I haven't graduated to a dozen yet.

Are you guys eating these eggs raw out of convenience?
I would imagine that is a fairly user-friendly way to go about it.

Yes, they are convenient. I used to use raw eggs in my shakes, and I still do, except for PWO shakes. If you put em in PWO shake, its best to stick with the whites.
If you want to avoid e. coli, dont drink the water when you go to 3rd world countries...

Yes, strictly convenience; raw eggs digest faster and it is much easier to eat six raw eggs per day than six cooked eggs.

Pretty much totally safe, but it is a lot of sat fat and cholesterol in your diet if you are doing a dozen a day. Something to think about. Salmonella from eggs is exceedingly rare.

I've been doing it for like 2 years without any problems. You can tell if they have a smell to it that it's probably bad and the egg shouldn't look runny at all. I use organic/free range eggs..used to use the Organic Valley brand..until I found a farm that sells them free range/organic and they're fresher and cheaper. If you're going to eat that many raw and go through a lot try and find a farm near you that sells them. I found mine through this website: http://www.realmilk.com/where1.html

Not true.
The protein quality is the same.
Raw eggs = fast digestion.
Cooked eggs = slow digestion.
Therefore, if you consume any eggs post-workout in your shake like I do - raw is the only way to go.
At the microscopic biochemical level:
Think of raw eggs as highly organized rows of strings (the strings being protein), like rows of corn, and the enzymes that breakdown protein run through it like a combine does a cornfield.
Then imagine cooked eggs as a tangled, bunched up mess all knotted and twisted together. It takes much, much longer for the hydrochloric acid in the stomach to work in between the knots to denature the tangle in order to make gaps wide enough for the enzymes to fit in and start breaking it up.
