Where i grew up in canada, (saskatchewan) the natives would always be called stereotypical things, but i am startin to believe these stereotypes just from experience not from other peoples words. I'm not sure what im tryin to say here but i would like to know other canadians opinion on natives and how they are treated etc...

i've heard a lot of stories...most of which weren't good.
however, i've worked on many reserves, the majority being fly-in sites, and i don't have anything negative to say. the one's i've had experience with tended to be quiet and kept to themselves.
it was a weird feeling being stared at (by kids mostly) considering i was one of the few white people they've seen in person.reborn.

What's suprising to me is the difference between the natives in the U.S and the natives in Canada. It seems that the natives in the states get alot more respect. I don't know how this happened, but to be honest I don't really see much good ever coming out of the natives in Canada. So, i dunno.

i went to Canada to stay at my friends house once, and they seemed to have a genuine dislike for natives, which is weird because you don't really hear much about them in the states ... i wonder what the difference is that gets the publics attention

First Nations people are pretty much treated like trash. Reserves are filled with drug problems, rapes, assaults, alcohol abuse(all tax free), etc. At least in the US they get casinos.
They're not really integrated with the rest of society in my city(nations capital) & in all my life I went to school with 2 native kids, one of them dropped out.
Any Canadians remember the Ipperwash incident? Btw the Caledonia land dispute is still going on. Natives represent a very small minority in Canada, reservation are ****ing terrible because often the people that operate them are ****ed out of their mind on tax free booze or from huffing gasoline.
Oh, Canada...

I live in a big city (~1 million) and seriously about a good 75% of the vagrant population is native. They also just get so much handed to them by the government; such as their own schools, cheap liquor/tobbaco, not to mention their huge royalty checks if they happen to belong to the right tribe.
I kinda see natives as being Canada's dirty little secret that they just try to sweep under the carpet..

Natives are treated like **** around here. Sad really, and nobody really do anythign to better the sutuation because. Then you have a lot of ignorant people whining about the fact that they get free school, or no tax, without knowing anything else about their situation. Allthough it is annoying when they wipe out the power to your city for a few days making everything in your fridge go bad, but still.....

I have native friends that are cool and successful they're great. I also see a large majority of bums are native and a smear on society. These aren't bums that are just down and out on their luck these are criminals that come into the store and try to steal us blind and fight with the staff. Booze and natives is a bad combo.

Well its weird to think there's still palces and towns where the whole poulation is antive, so when a white person comes in they just stare becuase they dont know what to think or act becuase they've never seen someone so different before. I mean there's also crown land which helps out the natives becuase that land cannot be cultivated or built on so they have a place to stay aswell.
I begin tomorrow. Eighteen weeks in this dark hole. 126 days of pain. 3024 hours of hunger and desire. I'm already counting the minutes, the seconds When it's over, I'll step into the light. I will shine...
Until then, you'll live in the shadow, in the darkness, in a place few will ever see... Where ugliness becomes beautiful.

Natives face widespread discrimination, being labelled as 'the drunks/homeless of Canada'. As a whole First Nations people make up 2% of Canada's population yet their females make up nearly 30% of the female population in prisons. Their reserves suffer from poorly educated teachers, their own underfunded colleges/universities, segragation from the outside world, poor health, lack of proper role models & representation in government, etc. Even in Quebec's sovereignty vote in 95, the defeat was blamed on "money & natives" by Parizeau. They face systemic discrimination, it's a difficult problem to solve. Much more complicated than "they don't have to pay taxes".

The Indian Act is outdated and needs to be reformed. That being said you should not direct your anger at natives. Instead learn about why they're treated different from you and I. That Act is an archaic system from the Victorian age. It was as recent as two decades ago that native women were still considered 'property' of their hustands and ex-husbands, even if they married a non-native partner. The Act was revised but for the most part Canada's hands were 'tied' because they didn't want to amend something they considered a part of 'Native Culture'.
It was also as recently as 1960 that natives were not allowed to vote in Federal Elections unless they renounced their native status. The Act itself is a separate entity for First Nations people, much like our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

well ive lived with indians in the US all my life. I think the difference between the two countries are that natives in Canada are nuts. My grandpa has a cabin in canada, and to get to it you need to drive through the reservation to get there (15 miles). I guess in the 80's it was really dangerous for a white man to even step foot on the rez. Once in th 80's my grandpa was traveling to the cabin and was pulled over by some indians and was chased into the woods. I guess they had the gun to his head. These kind of things happening, i'm sure it plays apart in the way the majority of canadians think about indians. Back in the US, where i lived, i think the indians had already lived a few generations on reservations, had there land taken, and lived among white men longer than the indians in canada. Give it 50-100 more years and they will catch up to where the natives in the US are at now as far as stereotypes go.

Not a sterotype it's life. 9 out of 10 bums that come in drunk and trying to steal mouthwash are native. Also Canadian prison's are over 70% native even though natives make up 1/35 of the population. You can deny the truth but natives need to organize themselves and clean up their act as a group. It needs to start at with education and community building and it needs to come from within. They need to stop blaming Canada for their ill's and start taking responsibility for their actions.

a lot of them have been dealt a bad hand and it's unfortunate...but i have known some that had many oppurtunities to take advantage of government handouts and never did.
if i paid no tax and got major help with school i'd have a permanent grin."They're not going to put cameras on street corners. They're going to give you Twitter & cameras on your phone. Who's going to police the people? The people are! They figured it out. They're going to give you toys to play with & they're going to play with their f**king toys & they're going to get so deep-rooted into our culture that you're not going to be able to live without it." ~ DJ Muggs
