what surface do you stand on? wood? carpet?
i use to lift barefoot but started wearing trainers recently got some really flat adidas that do the job well

I wear nike acg's they are nice and tough, and work well for my squats and such.

at hoem i go barefoot, at the gym, which is most of the time now, i just wear regular basketball shoes

Wrestling shoes work well. Barefoot can get a little stinky. A lotta power lifters like the old Chuck Taylors because of the thin soles.

I used to lift barefoot, but I feel more comfortable wearing normal sneakers now.

Two things: first, the lower your feet are, the easier the deadlift becomes because the range of motion is reduced. This is a big deal for powerlifters, obviously, but for bodybuilders it really doesn't matter too much if you're lifting a lighter weight through a larger range of motion or a heavier weight through a smaller range of motion .Originally posted by dookie1481

The second reason is that it's more stable. Squishy, thick soled shoes, like one would use for running, are a less stable surface to lift on.
Barefoot is probably not the greatest idea because of the total lack of arch support, but thin soles are definately better. Socks seem outright ridiculous, they're too slippery.

I lift at home, so always barefoot. Sometimes I put shoes on for lowerbody workouts, although I've never really noticed a difference.
