The RDL is a more targeted lift for your posterior chain, although doing RDLs can to some degree help you build mass on your upper back the same way deadlifts can. You can use more weight with deadlifts than with RDLs because they also engage the anterior chain (the quads). So deadlifts will be better for building all around mass.
Another big difference is that for a deadlift you literally have to lift the weight from a "dead" start, whereas RDLs start with a negative. Thus deadlifts require more "starting strength", to coin a phrase.
