    Simple question

    If i am 5'9, 165 punds, and my BMR is about 1837, does this mean I should only be eating about 1300 calories per day to lose fat? I don't want to lose TOO much muscle in the process, but really want to lose some fat.

    Yeah, that sounds right, cutting back 500 calories a day is only a pound a week, which will hinder your muscle loss. But an 1800 calorie bmr sounds a little low.

    dude don't reduce to 1300 calories. you gotta keep the calories comming in but up the cardio and try to burn more calories.

    Your BMR is your basal metabolic rate, this is how many calories you need to lay in bed all day and live. It does not account for digestion, daily activities, or exercise. You must add those to that number to come up with your daily needs. Once you determine that then subtract 500 a day and you will lose a pound a week.

    Example (not you specifically):

    BMR = 1800
    Digestion = 180
    Daily Activities = 250
    Exercise = 400

    Total = 2630

    Weight loss of 1 pound in a week = 2130 per day
    Weight loss of 2 pounds in a week = 1630 per day

    It is suggested you do not cut calories below your BMR, but I have in the past for periods of time. Then I bring it back up for a few weeks to normalize again.
    SW: 305 lbs (June 15th, 2003)
    CW: 186.5 lbs (Aug 9th, 2004)
    Initial GW: 205 lbs met Mar 29, 2004
    2nd GW: 190 lbs met May 31, 2004
    New GW: 185 lbs met June 28th, 2004

    bakers, thanks for the info. That is one of the most helpful answers I've received here. I need to UP my calories honestly. I've only been taking in around 1500 a day for the past 3 weeks. I am seeing results in my cutting though.

    As for cardio, I do cardio 4-5 times a week and lift 4 times a week. May be a bit much, but I want to lose the fat ASAP.
