I've been doing some thinking about when is the best time to take my ON 100% Whey Protein. I generally take one serving (23g protein) right after my workout, but then I started thinking it might be better to take it right before I go to bed because that is when you're body recovers. Which do you guys suggest?
Also, how many grams of protein can your body digest at one time? I recently read that your body can only handle 30 grams once every few hours, thus making protein powders that contain over 30 pointless unless you break the servings down over the course of a day. Is this true? Thanks.

I believe, although I could be wrong, that Caseine is the best type of protein before bed, although you could drink a whey shake too if you wanted to instantly have some protein in your body before you go to sleep. I've heard Caseine stays in the bloodstream and is absorbed over a period of 7 hours or so. This in my opinion would be ideal since you can load up on Caseine before bed and have the proper protein needed during sleep. I know Caseine is found in Milk, and there are some Caseine powders that are sold that have reduced fat and sugars compared to Milk. If you aren't concerned with gaining some body fat, or if you are trying to in conjunction with getting more muscle, then I would think Milk is the easiest and cheapest way to get Caseine.

Whey protein is optimal after a workout because of the fast absorbtion rate, however, a whey supplement is not the greatest thing before bed because of its fast digestion. It is best to take in Casein protein which are found in things such as milk and cottage cheese because it digests much more slowly which is good when you sleep because you go into a catabolic state.

Whey is absorbed much too quickly to be effective before bed. When you wake up, however, is a different story - after "fasting" for eight hours, whey is just what you want. Post-workout is also a good time, and pre-workout is effective if you aren't having a meal beforehand.
