I got one at sports authority for about 80 bucks, not including the tax, but I will tell you something, its worth it. Its what keeps me on check. If I am not on my hr rage I push it up, if I would not have it, I would never push myself as much. Its worth it.

monitor
http://www.timex.com/gp/product/B000...imexBrand=core
I've had this watch/monitor since 2003 or 2004. I love it. Medium to lower price (at the time). I haven't priced out monitors recently.
The chest strap is in need of fixing or replacing. Timex will do this for $25. I'm going to ask them to replace it for free (fix it for free).
It is always very close to the heart rate monitor machines at the YMCA. (Treadmill, Elliptical, Stairmill) Never more than a point or two off on the heart rate.
If I bought one today, I would look at getting a GPS option.
I guess you need to look at all options compared to what you want to spend.
Have a great day.

I have the Polar F11
and it is definately worth it! invest in a good one because it will last a long time and should be reliable. Definately needs to have the chest strap.

I have the polar as well, it gives accurate reading. As trainer I have been recommending the polar monitor. It's very goods stuff

I have a Nike monitor. It was only about $100. They used to sell Polar's at my gym (not sure if she still does) so lots of people have them. They seem to be happy with those but I really like my Nike.

Polar F11 / F55
The POLAR monitors are great because they often link to the cardio equipment at the gym so you are not forced to always look at your watch. Also they have a series of workout wear that allow the heart link transmitter to clip into the clothing.
No matter what remember - you get what you pay for!!

Polar SD Running model, can attach foot pod to measure distance.
HR is very reliable, as I think most Polar monitors are!
