The Low Carb Craze – My Take on it
Dear Friends,
Low carb this and low carb that…that’s all you hear nowadays. Kinda reminds me of something that was the craze a few years ago…The Low or No Fat Craze…Can you remember where that got us? Still Fat!!!
Well my friends this Low Carb Craze is going to bring us to the same exact place…Yep…Still Fat!
Listen, anyone who tries Low carb dieting will experience some Short Term success…but it’s only short term.
I know some of you are tired of hearing me repeat my self but any diet or exercise machine in and of itself will not work!
A successful Fitness Program must incorporate 5 Strategies:
1. A Compelling Reason To Change
2. Proper Nutrition
3. Progressive Resistance Training
4. Moderate Aerobic Exercise
5. Consistency
If you’re missing any one of these strategies you will not experience the success that you crave.
Why the Low Carb diets without Progressive Resistance Training will not work in the long run.
We need to build lean muscle on our bodies.
Why do we need to build lean muscle on our bodies? Building lean muscle will boost metabolism and that is what we want to achieve.
You’ll even start burning more calories even while you rest.
Right now I’m going to let you in on one of the biggest secrets on burning fat ever revealed:
Lean Muscle Burns Fat!
And, the more lean muscle you have, the more fat you will burn. That is a statement that you can take to the bank! I guarantee it!
Listen, all these people that go on these Fad diets are really losing water and lean muscle weight.
They Are Not Losing Any Fat Whatsoever!
How can they be if I just got finished telling you that in order for us to lose any fat,(and I did mean any fat!) you must have lean muscle tissue for the fat to go be burned up in?
Our bodies are smart; our fat just can’t go away it must be burned up in a muscle cell.
And if you’re not doing any Progressive Weight Resistance Training, well then, you’re not building any new lean muscle tissue.
Which means, you guessed it…you won’t be burning fat any time soon!!!
Don’t you see? The people that go on these Fad (starvation) diets turn into “skinny fat” people. Sure they lose weight, but they lose the wrong kind of weight.
Since these people usually don’t perform any weight resistance training and are only probably taking diet pills, and doing hours of aerobic exercise, they are losing water (from the low calorie, low carb diet) and lean muscle (from doing to much aerobic exercise and not having the right amount and the proper ratios of food in their bodies).
So what is left?
FAT!!!
They have no muscle tone whatsoever!
What these people should be doing is learning how to lift weights and get stronger progressively! The only way to do that is…
Get A Little Stronger Each And Every Workout
If you’re not getting stronger each and every workout than you are doing something wrong!
Then all you have to do is add: A Compelling Reason To Change, Proper Nutrition, Moderate Aerobic Exercise, and Consistency to be Successful
That’s all for now.
I hope you enjoyed this issue!
Take care,
Bill Belfert

Yes, a lot of what you say is correct, you need to work out properly as well as eat properly. But speaking for myself, I find that I eat a lot better on low-carb than I ever did on the officially recommended low fat diet.
For a start, almost all the food I eat is now coming from my local organic farmer's market. I'm eating almost nothing from packets or processed food. And for another, I feel so much better when I'm not experiencing sugar highs and lows. I'm on a low carb diet now for a year and a quarter, and I expect to be on some version of it for the rest of my life.
It's hard to tell now, since I didn't get my bloods checked while I was eating low fat, but I strongly suspect that I was one of the millions heading towards diabetes until I stopped eating LF processed junk and started eating real food. The fact that I lost three and a half stone when I switched to low-carb is almost beside the point.

there are many chemical reactions in the body that can lead to fat loss. a lot of the facts you stated are valid but there are many other factors you didnt consider. one reason that ppl start these diets is because they are just too lazy to work out and eat healthy. this means that while they will experience short term weight loss, they will most likely quit the diet and almost all of the carbs they eat after they have been deprived of any, will turn to fat. your right the body is not stupid, when we quit eating carbs, one of the bodys main sources of energy, it turns to fat storeages for its energy needs. it asumes that carbs are not available. however when we start to consume more carbs it stores all of them in preperation for the next "famine" that it thinks it just experienced.

Number One Man
I'd like to say that unless you have major severe types of diabetes or any other serious heart/blood pressure problems, going on a low carb diet is not the best route to take if one is serious about losing weight, keeping the muscle, and then gaining some new muscle. (Competitions don't count)
Few people understand the concept of oxidation tradeoffs between fat, protein and carbs. It's all done by a process of gluconeogenesis, where glucose is synthesized by non carb sources( specifically protein and fats ). And that's the key thing. When you take in more carbs , you body burns less in the way of fats.
From a textbook point of view, yes you can build muscle while being in ketosis(low carbing) following a one-two day carb up. You're letting the lag time effect take it's course. But in practical terms our bodies don't work in such a perfect fashion. Our body hates us. The reason why ketosis diets are so effective at sheddding off fat is due to a shifting between carbohydrate and fat balance at the end of the day. When you are ketosis, the extra protein, specifically lysine and luecine, and essential fats you consume generates chemical toxic water soluble bodies called ketones. ketones along with fat oxidation( lipolysis) feuls a process called gluconeogenesis, which is basically a very thermogenic process in converting amino acids and glycerol into glucose. So in a sense you are making your body work for it's glucose. Your body are still able to get the required amounts of sugar even without eating any carbs because this is made possible by gluconeogenesis. It's a double process which increases the fat burning oxidation rate , a two step process( conversion of lysine and luecine to ketone bodies, ketone bodies aided with fat oxidation supplies the feul for gluconeogenesis which results in conversion of amino acids ,preferable alanine, to glucose) . This two step process requires tremendous amounts of energy and ultimately speeds up your fat burning process putting you in a negative fat balance at the end of the day. And a negative fat balance is certainly very very desirable if fat loss is your goal. So in the end, this is what you truly desire and low carb diets and keto diets satisfies.
But what people don't get is that , in a ketosis state, the sole source of glucose would be from gluconeogenesis. The body wasn't designed that way , at an evolutionary standpoint, to only accept the glucose produced by that process. Liver and muscle glycogen would be filled up to a point but they would not harness it's full capacity. You would probably still look a bit flat . Consumption of a combination of both natural low gi carbs and protein high on the AI index would be the favorable method for gaining lean mass. Essentially with a c/p/f ratio of 40/40/20, it is very possible to gain lean mass at shedding body fat at a considerable pace, with your weight unchanged , a practice of body composition. Gluconeogenesis speeds up fat oxidation, while the extra protein consumed would be enough to feul gluconeogenesis for glucose and provide for protein synthesis and anabolism. The glucose would not be too little nor would it be too much since glucose is very fast acting, the more you eat the more you burn. Fat balance would be at a negative state so there's no worrying about not being able to burn off the glucose. Because practically, glucose doesn't make you fat. The overconsumption of it offsetting fat oxidation rate is what makes you fat. But since you are already in negative fat balance, you would not need to worry about gaining fat from the extra glucose produced by gluconeogenesis. The extra glucose would even make your muscles more full and pumped, while at a negative fat balance. And if there is more glucose to spare, it would just be burned. However, if you were to really go overboard on carbs, let's say 1000grams in a given day, then a good portion of that would be synthesized and stored as fats in your adipocytes, making you fat!
of course, you still have to take into account energy balance when the day ends. Carbs isn't as bad as what most people percieve it to be.

The best low carb diets include carb loading twice a week. I follow the NHE diet and get better gains while staying lean than I ever did on any other diet, that includes hypercaloric bulking.
