Anyone Know How to Tell the Difference Between Fat and Retained Water?
I have been wondering this for a long time and for the life of me i cant figure it out. might be because i dont tend to retain water or something but i have no clue. any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

To be straight to the point: it's almost impossible to tell the two apart. I do have a hunch that the the skin that holds water is less "thick" than the skin that holds fat. I can only say that by observing my abs retaining water and dehydrated, and at different bf percentages.
One thing is true though, a loss of fat is not only more noticeable, but is a bit more permanent.

Weigh yourself in the morning and see how much weight you've gained when your about to go to sleep that night. That's usually attributed to water/food intake for that day...It can give you a good guess atleast...

If you can still see your abs, but they're really puffing out in a bloated way (kind of like a third world child), then it's water. But if your abs are smoothed over, it's fat.

I try to take into account what I ate the previous day. Anything with carbs, sodium, or potassium can explain an upward movement on the scale.

what would you say the general prescription for "how much" and "how tight" to pinch, particularly on the abdomen, is appropriate. Should I try to grab as much as possible and squeeze it as lightly as possible? Or just try to take what might be considered a 'normal' pinch?

that helps somewhat more. also, for the calipers, i dont know how well they distinguish fat from water. i have the accufitness fatrack or something like that(the electric ones) and they always tell me i have a lower bf than i really do.
and if what jaim said is true then as far as i can remember ive never had a problem with retaining water even with a high sodium diet. hmmm...

I notice if you pinch the skin and it has a "ripple" effect, then it's just water. When you pinch and it has a thicker feel, then its fat.

Two things!
1. Rugger holy (blank) that's some good progress.
2. I've noticed if you stick to more natural protein sources like eggs, red meat, salmon and such your weight will fluctuate much less.
