I am sure everyone already knows this but I had no clue. We didnt eat tuna from a can when I was growing up and I have never eaten or bought canned tuna on a regular basis.
Lately I have been trying to make myself like it since its such a good food to eat. I have been buying the light tuna for about 60 cents a can, its mushy and just tastes like chum. Its horrible to me. Well i saw someone else eating tuna that looked totally different so i asked, they were eating solid white albacore tuna. Its in the same kind of can but cost 1.50 instead of 60 cents.
These are like two totally different products. The taste of the solid white is not strong and the texture is like fish isntead of like potted meat.
This has made my tuna eating much more enjoyable, just thought I would pass it on to those who are tuna ignorant like me.

I buy the cheap tuna all the time. The smell never really bothers me except my wife. She makes me wash out the can and lid before I throw it out. Just wanted to share.
Soon I will be on top.

sepul, are you using the cheap light tuna or the white albacore tuna that is more expensive?
the good stuff i ate tonight really didnt smell that bad at all. i ate it on saltines with tabasco sauce or soy sauce, actually pretty enjoyable.
the cheap light tuna taste like rotten fish eyes and nothing will make it taste good. nothing.

Not only do I simply eat Starkist Chunk Light Tuna in Water...I ENJOY eating it. At the local Wal-Mart, I get it for 33 cents per can. You just can't beat that price for protein.
For those who can't hack the tuna taste, try it with either honey mustary or Miracle Whip Light.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I too have tried the albacore pouch tuna, and to me, it tastes like ass. Just my opinion...

when it comes to canned tuna, I go for the white albacore. If it is a nice solid chunk and not much mush to it, I will put it in a fine colander or strainer and run some water over it. Takes away a lot of the smell and overpowering flavor for those non-tuna fans.
I also get the frozen tuna steaks at the fish counter at my grocery store. It comes in individual vacuum sealed packages, about 6 oz. each. It is usually about $10 per pound, but I stock up when it goes on sale at $5.99 per pound. I thaw the package under some running water, and cook it on the George Foreman grill and its great. You can make it rare like a real steak, or you can cook it well done and it is better than canned tuna. Makes a nice change from chicken breast for dinner.

I eat both types, I only eat the chunk light because its so cheap, albacore does taste a whole lot better though.
I can eat the albacore straight, but the chunk light I have to cut w/ some low fat mayo or mustard, stuff tastes like rotten ass.Aug 1 - Nov 1 Comp:

I do that too, must be an east coast thing
Also I have found out if you throw the regular 'ol tuna on some whole wheat crackers that will help kill the taste. I use Red Oval Farms low sodium stoned wheat thins. I serving size (2 crackers) is enough for one can of tuna."You've gotta get ugly when you lift"

Try the Albertson's brand or other generic brands of cheap tuna. They are closer to albacore in texture but not taste. You get actual fillets in there rather than shriveled up mush.
Starkist and chicken of the sea are known to just put shredded junk in their tuna cans. I don't buy either anymore unless it is .33 a can.
But I am also too much of a cheapskate to buy albacore. Hell for the price of albacore I can have red meat. Our kind has never been seen before.

We will never be seen again.

I am eating on average 4 cans of albacore a day. I just do it commando, right out of the can. Makes me feel all spartan.
I am going to have to do something for my coworkers, though. They complain very much about the smell. Before when I was eating egg whites they complained about them too. Maybe there just whiners?
I actually like putting 2-3 packs of splenda on it. Makes it taste like there is BBQ sauce on it.
I like putting mustard on my broccoli. 10 or more cups of broccoli a day.

Get the bumble bee tonno in olive oil. It is so good it is just unfair... As for the chunk light tuna, you have to squeeze it out real well before you start preparing it. Just completely detatch the lid and then use it as a press to get all the moisture out of there. It completely helps the texture. Chunk white in water is good too. I mix it up since this is one of those foods you can freak eating all the time. Fortunately, every style tastes markedly different. And for the record, I coule leave an opened can of tuna under a radiator for a month and it still wouldn't be as vile as potted meat food product. That crap is the slag from the processed meat industry
