Pro style dumbells
I didn't know where to post this but I ordered what I thought would be 110 Ib. pair of dumbells from ironcompany.com but it turns out with the handles they weigh 118 Ibs. yet 110 is painted on the end. I'm not ready to press with 118 Ib. dumbells so I'm not too happy right now.
Just wondering if all those pro style dumbells in the gym really weigh what they say or is the weight painted on the side just the weight of the plates not counting the handle. If so, that's pretty dumb but that's how the ones I bought are. I lift at home all the time so I don't know. I did weight my 100 Ib. hex dumbells and they indeed weighed 100 pounds.
Anyone here bought dumbells for their home gym that weigh over 100 Ibs.?

Could you just go buy 4x2.5lb plates and swap out the 5's on the dumbbells (assuming they are made with 5x10's and 1x5 on each side.) It would get you a little closer to 110lbs.

Well, I've been trying to get the hex nut off, I was going to just take off a 10 from each side and put on a 5. They came like you said. I think I'd rather have a 108 Ib. dumbell than a 113 Ib. one.
That hex nut seems to be permanently tightened lol. It's a bastard.

I'm just really pissed off I ordered 110 Ib. dumbells, they say 110 on the end, yet weigh 118. 240 bucks and I don't think they will let me return them. I'm dumb. I can still use them for shrugs, seated calf raises, SLDL, stuff like that. I can't press those things yet though, I only weigh 165 Ibs. myself. I could get a few reps but I'd kill myself just getting into the position especially since resting them on my thighs will hurt like hell since the ends aren't flush. I might have to try the powerhook setup.

Those are similar to the ones I use in this vid... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiOd4kaIh7Y
They are pretty secure, but I don't drop them.

If you used a credit card, dispute the charge.
You didn't get what you ordered. Plain and simple.

I used a card. I got my fingers crossed. If you check out the website, I don't know how you're supposed to know about these things.

Yeah holding them like that on the sides of your leg makes it alot more comfortable.

What do you do if you're pressing on a flat bench when you're done if you don't drop them? I just don't want to have to get up when I'm all exhausted holding 200 + pounds. Incline I don't drop them but flat I do.

You can use the weight to propell you forward.

Dropping them is so much more fun though. I bought all the rubber padding and everything and it's not to show off. It's just ok, I'm exhausted get these things off of me. I dunno, I think I'd get hurt if I did that all the time from a laying down position. Inclines aren't a problem.

A decent set of collars is more expensive but when you compare it to what a dental bill might look like to replace smashed out teeth, it definitely seems worth it IMO.

Bring the weights down to the bottom of the lift, tuck your elbows to your body, then move your elbows and shoulder to lower them like the negative of a hammer curl. Depending on the DB, you can set on the end or get it so one part is touching so it's a slight drop.

Yeah, it's easy. You just bring your knees up and perform a crunch, using the dumbbell weight to help pull you forward. Works every time.
Dropping them from bench height is okay but the guys in commercial gyms who toss them from several feet in the air need one dropped on their head. They f*ck up the equipment for everyone else.

Yeah that doesn't look too bad. Thanks for the suggestion. Of course being in my own house, I'll still probably drop them. They are only getting dropped from about a foot or so. The main problem is the ones they sent me are too damn heavy for me right now. I can't jump from 100 Ib. dumbells to 118.4 Ib. dumbells.

Yeah, my shoulder joints still act up occasionally... but they have been better since I've started taking the Cissus product, Incarnate. I usually do DB presses 2nd in my chest/shoulder workouts, so I can use lighter weight with high reps.

Those spring collars are extremely tight... they are a pain in the ass just to get on, so I'm not worried about them falling off.

They must have been pretty good ones. None of the ones I've used on barbells in gyms here have felt secure enough.
It's expensive but for a home gym I'd probably shell out for a couple of sets of these (around $70-80):

I feel like an assclown when I wander into threads and read people casually discuss DB pressing about fifty pounds less than I deadlift.
Good luck with the company.
