so we all know that 'too much' protein can cause kidney stones. how much is exactly 'too much'? how can you prevent this catastrophe from happening? lately, i've been very scared about this as i'm taking optimum nutrition 100% whey protein gold standard at least twice a day. i've heard the horror stories about having to piss out the kidney stones. :shiver me timbers:

Actually, from what I understand it's more an issue of proper hydration... The stones are mostly made up of calcium- but I've never been advised to cut back on either calcium *or* protein, but one of the ways to avoid them is to stay properly hydrated. (I've had two- I'm prone to them- and yes- labor is FAR easier and you want to die when you have them.)

the breakdown of protein intake in some people can cause high uric acid levels which can cause uric acid stones and / or gout. this is fact not myth. in people who have high uric acid levels, limited protein intake, consumption of enough water and / or medication will quite often remedy the situation.
