I have been picking up my training volume over the last week with great success until yesterday. I was doing biceps and did EZ-Bar curls along with wide and narrow grip curls on a preacher bench. Sometime during the workout I injured my left shoulder, but I didn't feel anything until about 4 hours later at work. I'm assuming it's from trying to get the bar into or out of position on the preacher bench, possibly when my grip was way wide or narrow. I knew going into the workout that I should have taken the day off because my upper body was still sore from the week's workouts but me being so stubburn I did it anyway.
I tried an Icy Hot patch a few hours before bed but it didn't really do much. I woke up in worse pain than last night. The pain can be felt most intensely when my palm is face-up and i'm raising my arm over my head. In fact, I can only get my arm a few inches up. The pain diminishes substantially if my palm is face-down. I think this fact will help pinpoint exactly what the problem might be. Any help would be appreciated.

The pain is in the area directly on top of my shoulder, where the first two deloid heads meet. I blew through the workout and even made a slight gain from the previous workout. I didn't feel anything out of the norm. I do carry food trays at work which can get heavy, but i've been lifting them for years now. I don't see that as being the cause, although it is the same range of motion.

You pro'lly injured the GH (it tends to pop out down and forward which could have happened holding the bar). You may have inflammed the bursa (top of the shoulder pain is a clue).
Check out Dr John Cox in Chicagoland (excellent chiro) who should be able to fix it.Psa 89:13 Thou hast a strong arm; Thy hand is mighty, Thy right hand is exalted.
