Stomach cancer......
I have recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer. My workouts are a struggle each time. I feel my body slowly declining and it stresses me to the max. I would appreciate any input for routines that are not to strenuos and will help me retain at least some muscle mass. I am a boxer and I try to stick to my training but feel that I need more. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I would suggest just doing what you can as far as exercise and not but your body through too much stress. Good Luck!

how did you find out that you have stomach cancer? I meant what lead you to have one? Are there any symptoms? My grandma had stomach cancer at the age of 82.

Hey Chilli, sorry to hear about the diagnosis. I guess that future workouts are going to be determined by whatever treatment they have lined up for you. I hope that if you explain to your Doc, your determination to stay in the best possible shape throught treatment and recovery, they will support you. They like it when we make their job easier for them
Main thing here is to channel your energy into dealing with the situation and getting well. So, workouts and stuff might take a hit but treatment and recovery is top of the list right now.
I can only try to imagine your frustration etc. But dealing with what life throws at us sometimes means compromises for a better long-term outcome.
Speak to your Doc and take some advice mate. Good luck, I hope you're fit and well very soon
**If it helps, I know 2 people who have gone through cancer treatments, 1 in their 40s and 1 in their 60s. Both just had to lay off sport for a while as the treatment left them whacked out. But both were able to eventually return and get back to where they'd been before they were ill

chili...all I can say is that I hope your treatment takes care of the cancer, and that you will come back like a new man. I really have no experience with this sort of thing, so I would just expect you will take the course of action that best fits a cure.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Hopefully, being in good shape before you start treatment will help you recover. I second SoN's recommendation that you talk to your doc about how to continue working out during your treatment.

Wow... shocking. I hope you find a balance with your training & illness. I'm really not the person you want to be taking training advice from (ignorant but know enough to be dangerous) but I hope you can take my well wishes for a speedy recovery. Enjoy your training, find some flowers to smell, wink at pretty girls, do whatever else you enjoy, and hang with good friends with whom you can enjoy all of the above.

By the way...
I need to say sorry to PsnIvy, I forgot to answer her question..... I found out about the stomach cancer because of a drastic fluctuation in weight. I have maintained a 250lb body weight for a while and started falling to around 230lbs in about 1 week. I had a lot of stomach aches and was passing a lot of blood. After an upper Endoscopy I learned that I had polyps in my stomach and they done a biopsy that came back malignant.(I think thats the right word...lol). Anyway, they started treatments immeadiately.
I have tried to maintain a good attitude but I am human and some days are better than others. I have always thought of myself as the man of steel because I've come through so much in my life (see my bodyspace and blog for the story). Hey, even Superman gets the blues..lol!! However, since reading all of your responses I can honestly say I am getting a new attitude!! Thanks again!!

Like your quotation in your signature says ...
Keep fighting the good fight ... running that race ... with FAITH in God! He will get you through, just as he did with the Apostle Paul who penned those words.
You are in my prayers, brother!

I had an uncle who had colon cancer back in the 1950's when most cancers were pretty much a death sentence. He beat it and just passed away last year at the age of 93. Don't overlook the mind body connection and keep a positive attitude. I've also read where people who are spiritual have better success rates than people who aren't and I saw your passage from the bible.
Also, there are alot of simple/cheap home type of things that they claim is good for cancer. I wouldn't try anything radical, but I mean, drinking 3 or so cups of green tea a day can't hurt i wouldn't think?
Good luck!

Hi Chili,
Sorry to hear about your medical issue and hope all works out well for you.
Not being a medical doctor I would not even think of offering any recommendations as to the type and intensity of training you should engage in to maintain your muscle mass. However, when confronted with a significant medical issue you may wish to speak with your Oncologist regarding what physical activities you should and should not engage in because in my opinion, your body is under a great deal of stress and I would'nt think that it would be beneficial to overtax your immunological system which you need to be strong to assist you in managing the treatment phase of your medical condition. Instead, it may be beneficial to speak with your Oncologist regarding forming a treatment team composed of a Nutritionist, a Physical Therapist who is a trainer and other support personnel who can assist you in maintaining the highest level of alimentation to attempt to prevent further weight loss, to maintain adequate physical conditioning and your morale while you are going through this difficult situation.
Let us know how you are doing and if we can be of support to you. Best wishes, Carl

Thanks guy's. I really appreciate the advice. my doctor asked what type of support system I have in place, so I am going to print all of your responses and show him! Thanks IdahoViking and I hope all is well with the grandbaby, you guys are in my prayers also. Thanks Carl for the advice, I will definitely talk to the oncologist about all of your points. I had a fight scheduled for June but have had to cancel. The guy I was scheduled to fight sent me a very cool email.

Diseases that kill are 'stupid'. They kill that which keeps them alive, their host.
Capitalize on this 'stupidity' and appeal to GIVER of LIFE for the knowledge to overcome this adversity. HE will take you down the path which is best.
My prayers are with you.

Live an abundant life!
Unless you have experienced cancer it is hard to explain the mental trials it puts upon one self. I had cancer of the salivary glands. It was misdiagnosed for 5 years. A night mare stemmed from that alone. After four major operations, the last one lasting 5 1/2 hrs, 2 pints of blood and months of facial rehabilitation, I rose above it all. I was 34 at the time. The first thought was "my kids! What will happen to them?"
I was lucky, I guess. My support from family, friends, and my faith sustained me. God blessed me and now I see my life as a gift to be lived to its fullest.
When before there seemed no time, now I take the time to do all the things I want. No excuses, no putting off. Live hard, love harder, and give away the things you want most! What ever you give away, will always come back to you multiplied.
If you want love, give it abundantly. Compassion? Then be compassionate. Health? Then give service to those in need. What ever it is you want, GIVE IT AWAY ABUNDANTLY! It will always return to you in abundance.
God bless you! My prayers are with you. ed

Hey chillipepper,
I am sorry to hear the diagnosis. I wanted to let you know that I just prayed for you, and I will mention you tonight at our prayer meeting.
I will be teaching on 2 Cor. 12:7 tonight. I will be keeping you in mind as we search the Scriptures.
In Christ,
Ray

It isn't fair!
You are not old enough to have cancer. Not that old people should get it, but that's who you expect to hear about... er you get what I mean.
My sister had breast cancer at 35.
You can beat it man. Are they doing kemo? If they are, remember, it is temporary. Get through stay positive, and come here for support. We are all here for you.
Keep us up to date in your blog.
