Craving Egg Yolks
Lately I have been craving egg yolks. I could pretty much take them or leave them before, but the past few weeks I have really been eating alot of them. I think I am eating enough of everything, and while I am trying to maintain a small deficit I am not strictly dieting. I consume around 2000 calories a day, more or less. I do work out a lot and have had some stress recently, which has led to me working out more.
I did a few searchs here and on the internet and couldn't find much about this craving. I just wondered if anyone else had this or knew what might be causing it.
Thanks!

Yolks have a lot of nutrients, minerals, and fat. Maybe your diet is not balanced in some way?
Why don't you eat an egg yolk (in moderation they are good for you!), and log your foods to see an accurate overall picture of your diet?

Thanks for the response. I think you are right, my diet isn't really balanced.

I agree that there is probably something your body thinks it needs that you can get out of a yolk, and that is why you are having the craving.
However, I thought I would also mention that I have noticed something similar. In the past, whenever I craved something, it was always something really sugary- candy, donuts, cookies, etc.... Now I seem to crave fat a lot, regardless of whether it is peanut butter, chicken skin, whatever. It's kind of weird. lol.

I know I say this a lot, but your body needs fat, including saturated fat, for general good health. If you don't eat enough, you will not feel as well as you could, and it can comprimise your bone health, as well as your immune system and hormonal system.
After years of being castigated as a health hazard, eggs are now being hailed as the best way to deal with high cholesterol. The results of a recent study seem to show that eating 3 or more whole eggs a day can turn LDL (bad) cholesterol into HDL.
If you crave fats, chances are you need more.

I never liked egg yolks until I was pregnant, when I was expecting my daughter I craved them. I thought it was weird, but I believe too our body lets us know when we are missing nutrients. I still like egg yolks but I don't crave them anymore. I say eat them, and then maybe the craving will pass.

Tritip-that is interesting, because I have noticed the same thing. I don't crave any sugar now, but I have had cravings for peanut butter and oil (like in salad dressing) and salmon.

Eileen-I had a very low fat, vegan diet for several years. Although I haven't been vegan since 2004, I think I probably did have issues related to a very low fat diet. At that time, my diet was 10% or less fat. I didn't touch meat, dairy, eggs, even fish for about 3 years. I also got sick often and had pneumonia a couple of times. I have changed quite a lot and would never put my body through that now. Also, I don't get sick very much at all anymore.

Molly-I think you are right, whatever it is, my body needs something in the egg yolks so I will eat them. I will try to add some other fats to my diet too, to see if that helps.
Thank you everyone for responding! You were very helpful. I will keep looking at my diet and try to see areas where I may be deficient.

just curious... when you say you are craving the egg yolks,.. does that mean you are actually eating them also, or are you just having the feeling that you want to eat them?
I crave a box of donuts, pizza, and burgers everyday... but I don't actually eat them

I have been eating more of them. Before I would have one whole egg, and two more egg whites. Now I will have 2 whole eggs. I have had 2 today and I may have 2 more tonight
I do crave peanut butter, but I don't eat it. I would end up eating the whole jar if I kept it around.

egg yolks-not so bad
Peanut butter and egg yolks are my craving now that I have got my carb cravings in check. I will eat 6 whole eggs on Saturday as a treat. However, I can't bring peanut butter or mixed nuts in the house because I will not stop eating them once I start. As far as the cholesterol from the eggs I had a blood lipid profile done my overall cholesterol was only 143, a lot less than the 200 you are supposed to stay under.

Thanks, that makes me feel better about eating whole eggs. I'll have to get my cholesterol checked again soon. In the past it was pretty low, like yours.
I don't know what it is about peanut butter or nuts in general but I can't stop eating those if I start.

i used to make the mistake of not eating yolks. but i found out that they have a lot of nutrients in them, and they taste awesome!
the problem is if you don't log them, the fat catches up to you, since they're so dense in fat. so like others said, just log your intake, but don't ignore yolks. they taste really good...

Keep in mind though that dietary cholesterol has very little to do with blood cholesterol.

I eat my eggs whole, they are a natural product. I think the benefits out weigh the supposed risks. The yolks are where all the vits. and mins. are.
Besides whats an egg without the yolk......yuk.

ME TOO! I used to never really even like the yolks unless they were scrambled or mixed in with the whites. But the last couple weeks I started eating 2-3 hardboiled eggs just about daily and boy do they fill you up alot longer than just the whites. I figure my body needs more fat so thats what I will give it!

I would kill 4 offensive linemen with my teeth for an egg yolk. But I can't seem to fit it in my diet.

The case for eating whole eggs...
I miss whole eggs when I don't have them for a few days. In case someone needs a good reason to eat them whole, a link from a recent post in the over-35 forum on Omega eggs:

My own understanding is that carvings for food are usually when something the body needs is withheld. Unfortunately, that also applies to high-sugar foods, salt, foods like chocolate, or alcohol, that the metabolism has become sort-of addicted to, and which are not part of a normal diet, balanced or otherwise.
Sometime athletes on restricted diets don't get the right combination of amino acids with their protein intake, even when they take supplements. The minimum levels may be met, but there is an imbalance of some sort, given the amount of muscle breakdown and regeneration.
Protein utilization is partly a function of having the right amino acid balance in our food, and eggs are an example of a whole food which rates close to 100 % utilization.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_protein_utilization
It may not be a big deal for someone who has a basically sedentary lifestyle, because the excess is broken down and converted to fat and carbs, but if you are 115 lbs and have a 2000 calorie daily maintenance, it may be something to watch.
Looking back, I am pretty sure something like that kept my then g/f from making the track team in college, but at the time none of us really knew much about it.
So, if you "crave" a food that is part of a normal diet, it may actually mean something... if you crave a bag of potato chips or greasy fries, it's probably safe to ignore it... <chuckle>
