Rowing machines provide an excellent CV workout as they involve more musculature than cycling, stepping or jogging etc and they are a zero impact activity meaning they are very joint friendly. They are excellent for improving and maintaining CV health and your aerobic respiration capabilities. At most I would use it every other day to allow your body time to recover between sessions, especially to begin with.

for increaing your V02 max , i.e. how much energy you can use to produce useful work in a given time, there one of the best, skiing machines may have a slight lead though.
if your trying to improve your cardiovascular health, keep the heart rate at about 60% of maximal, (220 - age) heart beat, otherwise you'll start burning off muscle as well as fat.

Rowing is great exercise, but like everything, the machine just is not as enjoyable as the real thing. A big thing to help you get a full body workout on the erg (rowing machine) is to use proper form. It should a 3/1 some say 2/1 ratio, this allows your body time to recover between each stroke and gives you better muscle contraction. It also translates well into a racing shell. My suggestion if you get one is go with a concept 2 they nice machines comparatively although they are a little pricey.

Buy a Concept II Indoor if you are going to buy one. Your workout on them should depend on what your goals are... ie losing weight. Depending on what else you're doing you could potentially row 6 days a week. Proper technique is essential for the workouts to have a real impact so be sure to understand how to row or your workouts will do very litle

I have heard the machine touted as a total body work out...in addition to cardio it is said you will work arms...back...legs and some abs. Most rowers say rowing is not so much a function of back or arms but primarily places demands on your legs. I like to hit the machine every day for 4,000 or so meters to end my gym time. Saw a video the other day where a guy demonstrated an interval workout on a machine...row 150 meters...rest 30 seconds is one set....the rowing he did was so intense the whole machine was walking across the floor. He was a conditioned runner and after 4 sets he could barely talk...looks like something worth trying that gets you some fat burning in a short period of time. He was completing his 150's in about 28 seconds.

After all these years, opie is probably jacked from all that "rowing."

I haven't logged in to my bb.com account in years, and have just seen this. So I thought i'd give it a strong 11 year bump just for old time's sake. Having been a member of this board for over 12 years I think I have the right

OP, since it's 2002 where you are, I recommend you buy a Concept 2 model C.
They stopped making them in 2003 and moved to the model D but it's a good rower and available in your time period.▪█─────█▪ Equipment Crew #53 ▪█─────█▪
