There is this nickle and dime family business called Walmart. You basically walk in and play "Name That Price!"

Best money I ever spent. Set me back $500, but if you want something high quality and that can take some abuse, it's worth it to fork over the money.

I don't know what you can really get with that price range except a good used bike. I would go to the nearest bike shop and talk with them, even if they have nothing in your price range they should be able to suggest something else or help with a used one.

I was going to buy a Hardrock, but the people at the LBS convinced me that the Rockhopper had a better frame.

I really just needed an all terrain bike that could get me to class and take it over curbs, nothing too serious. How much did you end up paying for the Rock?

your not going to get a good mountain bike unless you pay 500 and up. I suggest you just go with a trek bike, dont cost that much but most likely wont get disc brakes 200-300 price range

for a bike that will mainly riding in the inner city (roads, potholes, sidewalks, glass, trash, vacant lots), you should only have front suspension right? looking for a bike to.

if you are lacking money take a suggestion from this thread and then search it on ebay, best place for cheap used/new anything.

I personally don't mountain bike, but I just had to use this opportunity to brag about my dad. He's been mountain biking for years and has been the Florida State Grand Masters Champion for three or four consecutive years. And even when he rides or races in the younger age group, they STILL can't keep up with him. I'm so proud of him!
Oh, and to answer your question: I don't know how affordable they are, but my dad likes Felt.

Here's the Felt Web site if you want to take a look around. Just click on "Mountain" at the top of the menu bar:

I do, check craigslist....there is normally a lot of good deals there. Or get in contact with your local bike club and see if anyone is selling anything. Thats the cheapest way to go about getting a bike besides stealing your neighbors
