anyone have experience with nerve damage?

I had a herniated disc and got it operated on but 8 months later i still have nerve pain. I think i have nerve pain in my arm now because the pain is like a stinging sharpness and radiates down my arm into my hand just like how the nerve pain in my back radiates down into my calf. An orthopedic doctor gave me an xray but didnt mention nerve damage. I asked him about it and he agreed it could be nerve damage though and hes sending me to a physical therapist. Does anyone have any experience with nerve damage because i tested myself in the gym just benching 85 pounds for sets of 8 and the pain didnt get any worse. Is this a good sign? Is nerve damage usually nothing to worry about? I'd really appreciate some input on this thanks
