i know everyones proly gunna say bench press over push ups but i feel push ups have been givin a bad name lately and is the "forgotten" exercise. just wonderind what everyones opinion was. it seems more people i talk to today say bench press and older people like my grandfather who worked out 30-40 years ago say that push ups are the best exercise out there. i realy wouild like to know cause im also thinking of starting this 90 day training split but the only way the chest gets worked in this split is in variaionts of push ups. theres not one weighted exercise for chest. just pushups and dips.

Pushups and pushup variations are great for working nearly all of your upper body. And I know that I may get flamed for saying a gimmick product works, but get the PerfectPushUp. The damn thing will have you on your knees in no time, plus it prevents there from being any wasted effort or energy.

The key part of what you said was that people 30-40 years ago think push ups are better...a lot has changed since then and its been proven that more muscle fibers are recruited during bench press. This means that more muscle will be broken down, which leads to a higher possibility for more growth.

Go Pushups!
A few days ago I put all the large books I have and all the dumb bell plates I have into my huge school bag. Since the bag was ~30kg, i kind of put it on while sitting in front of it. Anyway, I thought I'd try a kind of drop set. First I would go to failure with the bag on, then i'd go to failure without the bag immediately after.
In conclusion, pushups are a lot more fun than the bench press if you get creative and you can do them everywhere. I also got a great worked feeling in my traps, pecs, lats, tris and upper abs the next day! Next time i'm going to get my gym ball involved in the pushup fun =D
EDIT: to answer the question though, bench press works my chest better than pushupsLast edited by akkxn; 04-08-2007 at 12:28 AM.

go pushups I got my chest pretty close to the size it is now with a combo of weighted pushups siper setted with dips. . . I recommend the power pushup 2 great product. I recently just bought it and I was very skeptical but resistance bands work surprisingly. So go PUSHUPS!!!!

Both are very effective exercises, its just easier to add weight on bench due to there being a bar.

umm well every product u see on tv for example to get good abs you need this ab lounge crap when you can get great abs doing normal curnches......therefore its not uncommon for people to take the time to invent soemthing that is more useless then the orgial way to do something....not saying bench press isnt a great exercise tho

Do fly then inclined pressups imidiatly after like a superset.
Fly will pre-exhaust the chest so when u do the pressups the myofibrilar damage is increase in your pecs.
Neither exercise is superior really just depends how you use them, because you can replaces push ups with bench."Lean Mean Muscle Building Machine"

Push ups are actually better then bench press(I know it's hard to believe). A recent study has shown that push-ups activates your pecs, triceps and even your shoulders more then a bench press. That's why a guy that can do a lot of push ups can bench more thn a guy who just benchs and can't to push-ups. I have been doing push ups for years now, without doing any bench and the first time I did a bench press(a week ago) I ws benching 265 with ease. I only weigh 165 and benched 265x10(it's amazing I know). This fact and the study prove that, the old saying bench is better than push ups is false and an old wives tale, good luck and take what I said into account if you really want to get big and ripped.
