Objectifying the States of Muscularity
I posted this earlier in SuperBraso's thread, but since you asked, it applies here too.
In the book "SLICED" (by Bill Reynolds & Negrita Jayde), the states of muscularity are objectified as follows (I'll summarize each):
1. Full house = Over or near 20% bodyfat with no visible muscle definition and only a hint of separation between major muscle groups if those groups are very large. Basically a person in this state could be confused for a football linebacker. If you're higher than this bodyfat percentage, you'd be considered overweight/obese.
Here are some examples of the Full House state:
Tankus: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1874224
CrazyMike: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2272262
2. Hard = Some muscle separation appears between delts and upper arm. Abs are still not visible. Approximately 15% bodyfat.
Here's a picture of Railz in the Hard state:
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1045047
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2114990
3. Cut = More muscle separation appears particularly in the chest and back, outline of the abs begins to appear slightly. Approximate bodyfat level = 12%
Here's are 2 examples of Abdominator in the Cut state:
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1705834
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1705878
4. Defined = Muscle separations get deeper in the arms, chest, legs and back, and abs appear when flexed. Approx. bodyfat level = 10%
Here's an example of Abdominator in the Defined state:
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2117293
5. Ripped = Abs are clearly visible all the time, vascularity in arms is prominent, chest and back separation is obvious, and face is starting to appear more angular. Condition can be held indefinitely. Approximate bodyfat level = 7-9%
Here are some examples of the Ripped state:
Railz: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1371361
Abdominator: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2075745
6. Shredded = Striations appear in large muscle groups when they are flexed. You look small in clothes, but look fantastic when you're not. Vascularity appears in lower abdomen and in the legs. Condition can be held for several days with careful dieting. Competitive bodybuilders often aim for this state for competition day. Approximate bodyfat level = 5-7%
Here are some example of the Shredded state:
ShaneG85: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1878949
Freaker: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...&postid=470182
Abdominator: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2168597
7. Sliced = Muscles and tendons begin to appear in the face when chewing, striations appear everywhere and vascularity appears everywhere. Bodyfat levels are close to 3% and subcutaneous water levels are near 0. Condition can only be held for a few hours at a time. Not a healthy condition to stay in due to lower water level.
Here's an example of someone in the Sliced state:
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2248100
Anywho, perhaps you can use this guide to determine how far you're progressing. If/when you decide to cut, make sure you give yourself 12-16 weeks to do it. It won't happen overnight, but the results can be striking when you get into the final 2-3 weeks.
Hope this helps.

skip, that was a great post. just out of curiousity, how do YOU test your bf%? do you have calipers? i may invest in a set - i saw a set for $20 last week - not bad. according to your post, i guess i'm defined (same characteristics as you in that pic), though, i dont have nearly the size that you do.

yea thats the only mistake i saw in that. crazy mike doesn't look like he's carrying THAT much bodyfat to be considered a "fullhouse" id say he's more in the "hard" catagory.

Yep. Just a minor typo I noticed. Other than that, that is a really helpful thread to those who do not have calipers.

True, CrazyMike is closer to HARD than FULL HOUSE, but it does show you the range of definition types that can appear in one category.
As far as measuring bodyfat, some people use calipers, others use water emersion and some use infrared (as I have in the past). It's difficult to be truly accurate when it comes to bodyfat percentage, mostly because you can have a low subcutaneous fat level, but still have fat surrounding your internal organs.

I notice you said linebackers look like they have 20ish bodyfat, is that true? I always thought they were fairly lean like 12%ish and linemen were 20ish?

Yeah, this would make a good sticky somewhere - people are constantly asking about estimating body fat from pictures.

that's exactly what I thought. I guess outside linebackers would have the lowest and then middle linebackers would have a bit more but I can't seem them exceeding 15% and yea I woulda thought offensive linemen would've been around the 20% mark

I plan to keep on bulking for over a year in the full house state but then I want to cut down to 8-10% and stay there forever. Is this a method that a lot of people use?

it says shredded can be held for several days but one of my old roomates maintains 5%. He works out mainly just his chest, biceps, and triceps. His bench press slowly gets heavier but he never adds any size, although he always does look really shredded when he takes off his shirt.

Genetics Prolly
I used to have a guy work for me. he maintained an insane low amount of fat. he drank black coffee all day and smoked like a train lol. (obviously not a body builder..but neither is your roommate)

The training intensity has picked up by leaps and bounds. The weights are heavier, the rest periods are shorter, the vomit is fresh and the mass is packing in like a Type II diabetic at a chocolate buffet. We use drop sets, super sets, giant sets, f%*k you sets, all with the heaviest weights possible… all free of charge and yes, we do make house calls. We scream, yell, cuss, throw stuff, don't put away our weights and make you look small. We are the people you tell your girlfriend you don't want to be, but she didn't hear you cause she is staring at my six-pack between my 18.5 inch arms. Fear not though, I don't want your girl, too much personality.

Personally I think that 'sliced' pic looks absolutely ridiculous. Why anyone would ever want to have that low of bodyfat is beyond me.
