    3 sets? 4 sets? 5 reps? 8 reps?

How do you decide how many sets and how many reps? Based on goals? I see many routines that will have 8 reps listed for one exercise and 10 for another? What about pyramiding vs. straight across? Can anyone enlighten me?

MOST of my exercises are 3 sets of 8 reps with the same weight on each set.

    it depends man
this probably sounds pretty typical, but ive always thought that lower reps/heavier weight help build muscle density, where as the 9-12 rep range tears muscle further
i would think that 3x8 is a nice medium between strength and hypertrophy
i'm big on 4 sets though, especially with my compound movements
3 just never feels like enough
