Actually, that doesn't surprise me at all. When I was in college a dormmate of mine used to be a chaperone for group outings of juveniles ... and they always had to do headcounts. One day they were down 2 and found a boy and a girl behind the hedges .... within inches of , ahem, learning the facts of life. This was in the early 70s.

1 school 1 even doesn't indicate a trend. This kind of stuff has been going on alot longer than most are willing to admit. The information just travels much faster than it did in the past.

It's like Vegas out there!!
Ya'll have no idea! It is unbelieveable
I've only been teaching 6 years (second career) and I've taught 7th, 8th and currently 9th graders. The trends towards sex at earlier ages have developed slowly over the last 30-40 years but students don't know any more about anatomy and biology then we did. What they do know is a lot more about getting laid and they don't seem to have any sense of propriety. They will talk openly about sex around teachers and coaches thinking we are not listening!
I love working with teens but I am relieved we never had any!!

in the local HS down the block from my office, there are currently 4 girls, aged 12 to 14 who are either pregnant or already had a baby.....FOUR!
and I am talking in a relatively affluent Westchester location.......
it is a real concern for sure......which proves that you are ready PHYSICALLY, at that age, but certainly not EMOTIONALLY........

Sort of off the subject but I wonder what is happening at home with some of these kids that are doing this at school. Kids like to show other kids what they have learned and sometimes what they have learned came from the mommies and daddies.
I read somewhere that about a third of all children are molested by a parent. ON the other hand I have never talked to a counselor that didn't say that figure was way low.
Kinda scary on all levels.

i have known a number of people who were sexually abused as kids and they have significant emotional issues today because of it (they are in their 30's, 40's and 50's today). really sad that this sort of stuff happens.

I do not have kids nor do I ever want to have kids. That being said, since I was once a kid, I say that behavior these days can largely be blamed on the parents, or lack of parenting. Once I hit my teen years and boys became really interesting I was advised to always use protection and be respectful of my body. This immediately took the "ooh, so taboo" affect away. I'm sure it was no less traumatic for my parents to tell me that stuff than it is for any other parent. Does need to be said though, otherwise sex remains some big no-no and that alone will make kids want to do it even more.
In the above story I blame the parents for the behavior of those kids. Kids make dumb decisions and it is up to the parents to guide them on the correct path.

I've always told my children that I (and I believe the good Lord) would prefer them to wait until they are married. If they can't do that, I told them I would prefer them to wait until they are adults and in love and that sex is not something to be taken lightly. I also always told them that if they opt (to give into the dark side LOL -- I didn't put it to them that way) to have sex before those times, that using proper protection (birth control pills AND condoms) was absolutely necessary.
I must say that this never seemed to be something on their minds in 5th grade! Good grief!
That is very sad.
I do fondly remember, however, a conversation with Brittany once where she needed me to distinguish between phone sex and oral sex for her as she thought they were the same thing.

I do not read anywhere in that article where the parents were present. Perhaps it is somewhat bad parenting to blame, but while we are at it we should spread the love to the teacher that was not watching, to the school that did not have correct procedures in place, etc.
I find that it is an easy cop-out to blame parents for everything children do. For all we know, their parents could be phenomenally good parents, and the kids just made an incredibly bad choice. This is why I hate the media - fear-mongering....

i know when i was growing up, virginity was something like head lice--it was something you didn't want anyone to know you had and something you wanted to get rid of as soon as possible. looking back on it, i see it more as something that is sacred, which should be let go of very reluctantly. but it seemed that everyone was in a race to have sex (i'm sure this probably has not changed, it seems a right of passage to being a man or a woman). i feel bad for the people who had their first experience with a prostitue--which isn't that uncommon--just to lose their virginity (and perhap catch something more serious).
my advice to young people is to do it when they are ready, and not a moment before, and preferably with someone that they love and are committed to and with whom the love and committment is mutual. do not let what any one else says or does influence their decision when it comes to having sex.

I remember that same conversation with my first wife !!
Seriously, I was a teen in the fifties and sex was on everyone's mind, it just wasn't as open. Thanks (or no thanks) to my mother I was a virgin until I was 19. and married at 20.

I was 21 when I was married and de-flowered on my honeymoon. We were trying to make it to Florida, but only made it 40 miles out of Columbia so my first sexual experience was at the Quality Inn in Orangeburg, S.C. I remember it being a "quality" experience!

I have a friend who is a principle of an elementary school and another who is doing her residency (in the ER) at a local hospital.
What's sad is, the friend who is the principle tends to have more "interesting" work-related stories than the one working in an ER of a hospital in San Francisco.
Oh, one more thing, the school my friend is a principle of is in a well-to-do suburb of the City.
Very scary...
FYI, my kids go to private school... about 200 students. I also know most of the parents!!!

The parents are probably too busy blaming the school. It is amazing to me how many parents actually think that the school system plays a part in raising children. Providing an education does not encompass all that is "raising" a child. If fact, its not even in the same ball park.
This is indeed very sad
EDIT: Not to let the school system off the hook. Unattended children is a recipe for disaster!

But of course the one thing you generally never hear is someone blame the damn kids. Drives me nuts - I would love to have the control over my children that the media makes it sound like parents have - then I would feel better about my daughters dating. The fact is, though, that you can teach your kids all you want, and lead by example, but it is still their choice what they do. Sometimes they make us proud - othertimes they make us wish we remained child-less.
Of course this general blaming of actions on others is not limited to children - personally responsibility in the US is not at an all-time high.....

I agree with you.
My comments were really specifically aimed at what parents expect the school systems to be responsible for. The lines have always been blurry, but right now the expectations are that parents have no role in what a child does when she is at school. That is soley the responsibility of the school system (according to many parents). In my opinion, that is dead worng.
My wife is a public schol teacher and its down right pitiful what is happening.

For some bizarre reason that makes me feel special!

this stuff has been going on forever, the differance now is teens are treated like babies still, back in the day they were forced to work early, and if they got knocked-up they took care of it, no school, no college, they went right to adulthood, this is the only differance.
kids were just as crazy and bad back in the early 1900's (but they may of been more respnosible for their actions back then, cause mom and dad had to take more care of themsevles still)
