California class action suit against 24 Hour Fitness

To those of you in California, did anyone else recieve a letter in the mail notiftying you of a class action lawsuit against 24 Hour Fitness? Someone finally decided to sue them for charging people after they cancel their membership. I tried to cancel mine back in September when I moved, and they made it almost impossible. I kept getting charged, and finally disputed the charges with my credit card company. It got pretty ridiculous. My mom had the same thing happen to her when she was a member about 15 years ago. I ended up renewing my membership about two months ago because 24 Hour Fitness is much more convenient to m e than the other gym that I joined, but that doesn't change the fact that they're about as bad as AOL when it comes to cancelling your membership.

Anyway, the letter I got basically said that if you entered into a monthly contract with them between January 1, 2001 and January 1, 2006, and cancelled your membership, you are entitled to either a refund of your last month's dues, or a 45 day pass to the club. If you are currently a member, you can choose to upgrade your membership without paying a fee, change your contract to make sure they won't charge you any extra last month's dues, get a half hour training session, or get a 45 day pass.

Anyone else get a letter?

I moved from Houston last year and had no trouble at all cancelling my membership. There was a 30 day notice clearly written in the contract. I did what I was supposed to do by providing notice and they cancelled without any hassles.

Be aware that most class action lawsuits are really get rich schemes for the lawyers. The lawyer gets hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars because the defendant company settles rather than spending 5 times as much money going to trial and the schleps who were "wronged" get peanuts like a months dues ( which are worth what $30???) or a 45 day pass( Wow! That's worth $45!!!).

I got two of them. One from the law firm and one from 24.
