I shattered my wrist and dislocated my hand on a 4 wheeler a couple weeks ago and i am wondering what i can do so i don't lose my size and muscle. I obviously can not grip anything with my one hand and other than legs, abs and a few creative exercises i don't know what to do.
Not sure if i should work out just the one side of my body or not. I don't want to get real asymmetrical by doing that. Please help with ideas as i've been told i won't be able to grip a weight in over 6 months.

lowerbody. if you have things like a cable cross machine available, they generally have attatchments that are like a velcro strap, and doing that around your forearm could give you a decent workout. not the same as full mobility, and definately doesn't work as much in as many ways, but its better than nothing. i'd reccommend just working the legs and cardio, and resting the upper body. comming back too soon is definately going to hurt you more than it will help.

Well,as luck would have it(sort of).I have the same problem.
I shattered my radius 5 weeks ago and have a plate in there now.also, badly dislocated my ulna at the elbow, and,at present am still working out pretty much every day.
obviously no weight lifting as my arm is fragged just now but lots of running, bergen work(heavy back pack, walk up and down a hill till you puke),abdominal work and neck work.also, although i dont do more than a few light sets a week,1 hand dumb-bell deadlifts with my good hand to help keep my lower back in shape.
Now,when i first did my arm,a lot of people suggested i use the time wisely and squat a lot.however,i found that i couldnt grip the bar so i canned that idea.however,if you have access to a leg press machine, then use it if you can.
To be perfectly honest though,at the moment,i'm using the time to shift some bodyfat and get more cv fit.ok,so i'll lose a lot of muscle and size, but i can always build back up once i'm healed(provided i can actually lift again. The radius will be shorter and a little weaker so the doc doesnt think it'll be as strong as before......still....we shall see).
Anyway. As we're pretty much in the same boat i thought i'd offer an opinion.
Do as i'm doing.Use the time to get mega fit and ripped and worry about putting size on once you're healed.
Take it easy.Heal well and good luck.
Drop me a message if you feel so inclined.
Jet.I need no Religion.
Only my strength.

Sounds like we are pretty similar, i shattered my radius, fractured my ulna, dislocated my hand and tore some ligaments. I got a steel plate w/ 14 screws, a pin for the ligaments and i had carpal tunnel surgery for the nerve damage.
I'll take your advice and just focus on getting ripped and doing lower body, wasn't sure if anyone had tried working out one side of the body only. Thought maybe naturally the other side would get some benefit.
