    Enriched Flour?

I have been eating bagels in the AM for my after run meal. They are good for getting me energy and I have not gained fat. I usually buy the wheat or honey wheat ones. I put natural peanut butter on them and that tastes awesome. Anyway, I have now heard that although the flour is whole wheat, the fact that is says "enriched flour" as the main ingredient is the same as it saying "white flour." Can someone fill me in on the similarites and differences between enriched, wheat, and white flour? Thanks alot...

I seem to remember something about the enrichment process in wheat that adds three or four types of vitamin or mineral. This sounds good in theory but I also remember briefly that this was bad, somewhere along the lines that pasteurised and homogonised milk has the same problem. I can't remember yet I thinkt he enrichment prcess changes the makeup of the wheat. Usually ready sliced bread is made using the enrichment process, which may help to explain the reason why it is softer than other breads....I dunno. I feel that there isn't much noticeable difference apart from taste. There should be lots of anti enrichment sites, there are for everything else ^^.
There are a few kinds of gym lifestyles. There are those that show up to do cardio, which could really be done for free, there are those who go to socialise and there are those who go to lift heavy weights. There are however 2 almost opposing lifestyles which seemlessly meet at the gym. They are the 'pretty boy' lifestyle and the 'bodybuilder' lifestyle.

The PRETTY BOY has a yoghurt an hour before going to the gym. He uses the rowing machine and does 30 reps. He does some jogging then goes home, eating some low fat yoghurt, celery and maybe some crackers before going to bed.

The BODYBUILDER has a litre of milk mixed with protein powder before he goes to the gym. He busts his gut lifting almost non stop for an hour, then he washes the pain away with another protein shake. He then sets off on his way home but stops in a steakhouse and eats half a cow, and puts the other half into a doggy bag. He gets home and eats whatever is in the fridge and then he sleeps for 10 hours.

Which one sounds more enjoyable to you?

The problem is that refined flour is enriched simply to make up for the vitamins that are taken out of it as a result of removing the bran.

Enrichment of refined flour isn't a bad thing - it's probably a good thing - but it would make much more sense to simply not have the refined flour in the first place, and get the extra fiber.

Whole wheat flour = flour made from ground-up wheat.
White flour or refined flour = whole wheat flour with the wheat bran (and thus fiber and vitamins) removed.
Enriched flour = white flour with vitamins added to make up for those lost in the refining process.

Virtually all white flour is enriched flour, and it is a no-no, basically. Look specifically for "WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR" at the top of the ingredients. If it doesn't have that, it's not a whole grain product.

    .....

    you said:

"Whole wheat flour = flour made from ground-up wheat.
White flour or refined flour = whole wheat flour with the wheat bran (and thus fiber and vitamins) removed.
Enriched flour = white flour with vitamins added to make up for those lost in the refining process. "

But you didn't cover the main ingredient I see a lot of..... "enriched whole wheat flour".

I see this alot on breads and whole wheat tortillas.

So what is the difference between "enriched whole wheat flour" and "whole wheat flour"?

    i loled

the difference in fiber isnt a big deal if you can get your fiber from other sources...which you should! fruit, veggies, soaked and roasted nuts, seeds. in soups, blended, as sides, whatever. these imo are the most important foods for this lifestyle.

i personally hate the branny taste of whole grain stuff, and its harder for me to digest. freshly baked white bread has been sooo helpful in my quest for gaining weight as an ectomorph. maybe i should update my stats...

its all about the cals in cals out brah.
