A guy at the gym told me that he always uses the Smith Machine for close grip bench press. He said the reason was that you don't have to balance the bar (since it does it for you) and you also can use a thumbless grip... something you couldn't do on a normal bench and would help with the form. He feels that it helps you isolate the triceps a little better.
Sounds reasonable to me, what do you think?

no, back to freeweights for you
- you can use a thumbless grip close-grip benching (i used it for years)
- balance is only an issue if you have improper hand width- want, for close grip, palms over elbows (such that there is very little difference between a close-grip and a regular grip movement)Booo

First of all, a false grip has no advantage over a normal grip. The only thing that you will get with a false grip that you probably won't with a normal one is a cracked sternum. Second, throw the Smith machine away. You should never do ANYTHING with a Smith machine (other than standing calf raises and a few others). I don't care how big they are, most of the people at the gym don't know ****... hell, neither do many personal trainers.
