question for women over 30 years....
I was wondering, how many of you gals over 30 have problems with your metabolism? Do you find it harder to lose the weight? Are you noticing areas that hold more weight since you turned 30?
I'm very curious... i'll be 31 soon and like to know how women feel about this. I want to know how many women out there are experiencing the same problems as I do. I've heard that once a woman turns 30 things just start to slow down and your body really changes.
thanks for your input,
gymgirly

I'm 31 and no problems so far with things slowing down. I think it helps to have always kept oneself active. I've always made it a point to stay active and get exercise ever since I was in HS so I'm sure this has helped me. I'm also a competitive inline speed skater so by participating in a sport regularly, I think that has helped me a lot as well. I think that if you work at it and never let yourself get too sedentary that it's possible to keep your metabolism up or at least keep it running the way it should. So staying active and probably even more so it is important to keep a good nutrition program, i.e. eating clean every 3 hours. That's my experience so far. I hope that by keeping a good nutrition program and staying active that I will never have to worry about my metabolism slowing down and my gaining fat.
But yes, I do know that if you are older and put on extra weight, especially in your 40's, that it's doubly hard to get it off.

I'm 30 too!!
I have not experienced any problems with my metabolism, however, I've always been very active and still am. For the past three years I've been tinkering with my diet to try and push myself to that next level, but there's a lot of trial and error involved there, and I'm still trying to get it right. I think I may be more active now than I was in my 20's.

Bump to Lizzee and BuffedWildCat. I'm 32 and have had similar experiences.
I've also discovered that completely eliminating planned cardio sessions has helped me no end. I maintain muscle better which in turn, burns calories, avoids overtraining and keeps my bodyfat at around 15%.
I lift 3 times a week and eat whole, fresh foods (no low fat rubbish) about 5 - 6 times a day. Carbs AM, fats PM, protein all the time and carbs/protein after a workout.

I'm 32, around Eastern last year I decided that I had gained too much fat over the last years and went on a diet fo the first time in my life. 6 weeks later I had lost about 15 1/2 pounds. Over the course of the next two months or so I lost another 4 1/2 pounds. I was down at 121 pounds, the lowest I had been since I was 15. I burned about 2500 calories on my "off" days, way more when I was training which back then was either Judo, bodyweight exercises or cardio (about 30 to 40 minutes).
I can't really say that my metabolism has slowed down but then again I have become more active. Before the diet I did Ju-Jutsu and Judo 2 to 3 days a week. Since I added bodyweight exercises and weights my body burns calories like a madwoman.
Oh, yeah, and I still gain at the butt and the thighs first. No change there...

I just turned 36 and can't really speak to the metabolism slowing down as I've reached this age because I managed to wreck my metabolism for a long time, the same dumb ways many people do with the yo-yo dieting and eventually huge weight gain in my late 20's. (Billowy Blimp is a phrase that comes to mind). But my metabolism came back in full swing. it seems to me. as I fixed things up. In other words, deblimping myself. . I do believe it'll only get better and better also, as I put on more muscle. Which has its downsides of course! More expensive, more planning........but all in all, who's complaining???
I bet those metabolism slowing down studies really have a large correlation with the general population losing muscle mass as they age.......I'm not so sure that the metabolisms really do. With the amount of trash I see my coworkers putting away I have to wonder about that myself?

I'm 42 and had no problems whatsoever with my metabolism & kept a bodyfat of around 13-15% by eating healthy every 3 hours or so, lifting 4 times a week & doing cardio 5 times a week during my 30s. After 40 years old, I did notice quite a change, even though I was doing the same activities and still eating healthy. My bodyfat started rising and I have to fight to keep it at 16% now. In any event, the 13 to 16% bodyfat range is great, so I'm not real concerned about it -- I just know it takes more effort on my part now, if I really want to get lean for bikini season each summer.

Well then I'm in for some serious trouble cause I have to stay dang strict just to MAINTAIN at 16% and to get below that, geesh, we're talking some major FIGHTING with my body!

That's exactly right. One of the main reasons people become overweight as they grow older is because after the age of about 25, you lose a little over 1/2 lb of muscle a year! And the only way to prevent that is by weight training. Just another reason why everyone should weight train.
