An argument between my gf and I
Ok, my g/f comes home from work (she works in a radiology dept at a hospital) and lays into me about my diet. Actually, to be more specific, my protein intake. She tells me that she mentioned the fact that I take in about 150 grams of protein a day to a Dr. there and was told that I am going to be damaging my kidneys because of it. She also reminded me that someone my size (217 lbs at about 12%bf) can only take in 24 grams of protein per meal and anything over 75 grams a day will not be processed by my kidneys and will therefore cause renal problems. So, does anyone have a good idea of what the maximum intake of protein would be for a guy my size? I am currently taking in about 5,500 calories a day as well. She told me that she will drop the argument if I go to the doctor and get a blood test and have him/her state that what I am doing is perfectly fine. I realize that this should be in the supplements section but this seems to be the best place for nutritional advice. Any thoughts?

It's really hard to say because it's so individual for each person. Go have the blood work done and show her. Don't count on a doctor stating what your're doing is fine.

IMHO get the tests done, and see what it comes out to be, but no one can be for certian that you are perfectly fine only time will tell. Do you do steroids? Does she know about that? Sorry I really dont know your history only saw your posts from time to time. Good Luck

She was telling me that most weight lifters that eat like this will eventually end up on dialysis. My mother worked for a nephrologist for almost 25 years and she never had a single weight lifter come in there for any kidney problems. I tried to tell her that a doctor isn't familiar with diet and excercise programs and how the body deals with added supplements. It's an uphill battle. I guess that I am headed to the doc sometome next week or so. Unless I have kidney failure by then.

All I can say is good luck, we die when we die, just have fun and be safe with your life, meaning dont over do it, but imo eat the way you want to eat, its obviously paying off. Most people dont eat like we do, train like we do, thats a good think, like I said just continue what you are doing nothing wrong with some protein as long as its from whole foods ofcourse. and good luck.

Thanks bro, I do eat and work out like a f*ckin' animal. 6 days on with only one day off. Along with 4 days a week of 30-45 minutes of cardio. Not bad for an old fart, huh.

150 of it is just from protein shakes. I take in about 250 or so a day. Sorry about that.
I have a question....what happens if your body cannot use the protein that you have taken in? Is it just disposed of by way of taking a piss? Or is it stored up in the body until it can be used in another way?

Make sure you're not on creatine when you get the kidney function test or your argument goes out the window.

I take creatine once a day right after I work out. What exactly does it do to a blood test? Or any other analysis for that matter?

Converted to glucose/stored as fat.
It can just be wasted away and pissed out.

The waste product of creatine is creatinine. Creatinine level is an indirect measure of kidney function. If you are taking creatine, it stands to reason you will have a high creatinine level, which to a doctor means kidney dysfunction. This is how the "creatine causes kidney stress" myth is perpetrated. Drop the creatine a week or so before your blood test, or you will have a high creatinine level and your gf wins.

My brother was born with a kidney disorder, he had surgery on one when he was four years old. This left him with 1 good kidney and the other about half functional. His doctor recently told him he could eat all the protein he wants. Unless you previously had a kidney disorder i wouldn't worry.

I wouldnt say that, just stop useing it before the blood tests, I would wait a week or so to make sure its out, to my knowledge its not going to kill you if you use it 2wice a year or a little more. Ive used it but it never had the same effect it had the first time and now it just gives me gas.

There must be a way to test for dysfunction, and a high creatinine level is one of the markers. Like high triglycerides is a marker for heart disease, elevated WBC count is a marker for infection, etc.
I'm not saying that high creatinine levels means your kidneys are not functioning properly, I'm saying that it is one of the things they measure for when testing for proper kidney function.

Yea well, taking in 800 grams of carbs a day can seem like a lot too. But tell that to the marathon runner who burns that off in a few hours.
Sure, 150gms may be a lot for the average joe. But if you hit the gym daily, your body processes every little bit of it.

It's hard to explain something like this to someone that is young (24) and who works in a hospital. As soon as it was told to her by a doctor she took it as the final verdict. I can't imagine why she would think that I was doing something uninformed. She keeps dwelling on the theory of my kidneys not being able to handle the amount of protein that I am throwing at them. Is there a study that could be found online that I could show her just to shut her up? Something that states how it is not likely to cause kidney damage by eating protein?

I don't know about that, but I've had a variety of girlfriends over the years that love to invent and micromanage especially in areas where you're doing well. It's a control technique.
My current combat technique is to simply and flatly refuse to cooperate.
