Question: Drinking Your 8 Glasses of Water...
You know you're suppose to drink 8 glasses of water a day, right? Is it better for you to seperate them throughout the day- or more so, is it detrimental if you just down em all in a short time frame? Reason I ask is because I don't really get thirsty a lot and don't usually drink much- so I'd rather just down all the water in one sitting and get it over with, but I'm not sure if that defies the whole purpose. :/
Imput would be appreciated and reps rewarded for good advice. Thanks!

also you can use that calculator to find out how much water you actually need. you make not even need as much as you're getting, although it probably doesn't hurt.

You really want to chug a half gallon of water all at once? Good luck with that.
Space it out over the course of the day, as you would any beverage. Also, the "8 glasses a day" is not a hard and fast rule. Typically, the appropriate amount to drink would be half your body weight in ounces (so if you weigh 100 pounds, you would drink 50 oz) plus another 8oz per hour you exercise and cup of coffee or caffeinated beverage that you drink.
So you weigh 120 and have a soda, drink 68oz of water.
I like to buy bottles of water and refill them from my Brita pitcher throughout the day. 3 24-oz bottles and I'm good!

I try to drink about a gallon a day. It is better for you to space it out over the day. Even if you arent thirsty still drink your water. It is said by the time you feel thirsty your all ready some what dehydrated!. Not good for you. Drinking water also helps with your energy levels. I didnt know that untill recently. If you decide to drink to much at once you could actually get sick. Its like water sickness. Watch your urine. If its yellow you need to drink water. If its clear or almost clear your good!

I drink TONS of water, way more than 64 oz. Which is probably why I have to tinkle on an average of once an hour :-P

Yeah, get ready for increased bathroom usage, especially as the day wears on.

Drinking them at different parts of the day would maintain a more consitent hydration of the body. You drink all 8 within an hour, and you're gonna end up pissing some of it away which immediately goes to waste, which gives your body less of those 8 glasses to work with.
Not saying you should do this, but I drink a minimum of 6 litres a day. If I drink less, I feel horribly dehydrated. But if you're gonna stick to the bare minimum, space it out. It's just like food; eating smaller meals more often will keep blood sugar levels at a fairly balanced level, and give you a better distribution of energy as opposed to simply eating everything in one shot.

chugging it all at once is bad. Gulping water causes the gut to distend which shuts off the thirst mechanism in the body, causing you to feel hydrated when in fact you could be dehydrated still. Therefore even if you are dehydrated, you shouldn't chug.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone! I'll space it out throughout the day and figure out exactly how much I should be drinking, though the more the better it would seem!

I'm still astonished that someone actually had to ask if it was a good idea to drink 64oz of water in one sitting.

8 glasses is too little. Just lug around a gallon jug of water all day. Sure, I tend to get funny looks, but atleast I'm not like the fat guy that carries around a 2L bottle of soda all day.

8 glasses isn't too little if you're not a large person. A 110-pound woman isn't going to need as much water as a 190-pound man.

There was a lady that died a few months ago from drinking too much water in one sitting while she was trying to win something from a radio station. I would say drinking it all at one time would be bad given this example.

if you aren't working out, 8 glasses is an average amount. Granted, you get water from more than just glasses of water alone, so you may not have to drink an actual 8 glasses, but this is a good generalization to go by. However if you do exercise you should get at least 3L a day evenly spread out.
If you want to lose water weight, go with 2+ Gal a day, but trust me, it's no fun at all having to wake up 5 times throughout the night to go to the bathroom. One of the worst parts in contest prep, IMO

She drank multiple gallons of water, though, if I recall correctly. (And talk about Darwin in action, jeez. What an idiot!) By comparison, 64 oz at once won't hurt you (except insofar as potentially rupturing your stomach) but it's like, why do that to yourself?

Well, my imput is that you should drink not only 8 glasses, but 8 gallons of water straight from a funnel-and-hose drinking device.
