honestly, at 17. you dont need a fast car. i love muscle cars, but if i got one when i was 17 id be dead by now. get a decent lil commuter car or pickup. then again, if youre the one buying, not mommy and daddy, get whatever your heart desires and your wallet will allow. one thing i noticed a few years ago though, the eclipses and talons had camber probs(that means the wheels lean inward at the top and you wear tires prematurly and lose handling) very early in life.

For those that keep saying he is young and its his first car and he'll wreck it, your totally wrong there. Stupid drivers who have the intent to run up and down the road driving like speed racer are the ones who wreck. I've had my license since I was 16, have had 3 cars, and havent been in one single wreck. I know alot of young, cautious and reliable drivers that know what their doing behind the wheel. Hell my 17 year old brother has been driving since he was 15 and hasnt had one fender bender or wreck of any sort, and he has driven my 6spd Celica GTS, my 01 Mustang GT, and my parents Dodge Ram, so its not the age its the driver.
To the OP, you could get an 87-93 Ford Mustang with a 5.0 v8 for under $5,000 in American dollars. They have tons and tons of potential and are reliable. Other than that I would say an older Civic, Celica or pickup truck.

When I was newly licensed, I drove alot. All hours of the night, all parkways everything. Never even came close to an accident yet (no jynx).
I never did any of the stupid speeding reckless driving **** either though. Not all 17 year olds are going to crash their first cars."Adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it."
Think about what you want in life. Then ask yourself what you're doing to achieve it.

I think it's best for your first car to not be "fast".
I've grown up around speed, been riding dirtbikes since i was 9, and fourwheeles (quads) since before then. I felt the same when i was 16, i knew i had the reflexes and skills to be a good driver, but what i didn't know is that in every day driving, driving skills are only part of the equation. You have to learn to be more aware of your surroundings. The truth is, most people are really bad drivers, and then to make matters worse, probably 75% of the people driving are destracted in some way (cell phone, radio, kids, etc...) With all this going on around you, you don't need to add to the danger by driving a car you'll be tempted to drive wreckless in.
I believe it's best to get a safe, economical car to begin with, odds are you'll wreck or damage it one way or another anyway. Get something to learn to drive in first, then "graduate" to something better in a couple years.

Its not the age of the person or how experienced they are. Its how cautious and alert the driver is. I honestly think I'm a really good driver and I've never been in a single wreck in over 6 years, but that doesnt mean I wont ever wreck because of some guy who is 40 years old who has been driving for over 20 years because he is talking on the phone and yelling at his kids. I kinda hate how some people talk bad about young kids being the reason for high insurance quotes and all the wrecks we have, its not because of that, there are many other reasons.

Statistically you are the person most likely out of anyone to get in a car accident.
Being a good driver isnt only watching where you are going. But watching where other people are going and trying to avoid them. Because chances are if you are actually a good driver, other sucky drivers are going to cause you to crash by either pulling out in front of you or rear ending you.
Driving-just like everything else-is something where you learn from your mistakes. Unforutnately driving mistakes are a little more costly.
Anywayz, my recomendation would be just to get an average car at first. Save up your money, and after you have it for a year or two sell it and buy something you really like. By then you will be a safer driver and know more about what you want in a car. Like me, i always thought i wanted a 2 seat sports car. But after a while i learned it sucks not being able to haul your friends around with you. But some people are the opposite, and find they want a 2 seat car so they dont have to haul their friends around.
Just something to think about . . .
edit: Civic si is a prety fast car . . . If you have the dough the WRX is a very fast car. Very fun . . . lots of other amazing cars out there.

Oh lmfao. I have 2 friends that have had 2 fast cars. Both of them have wrecked both. I opted for a not fast but fun car and I haven't had one accident.
I am seriously loling @ 'Oh I've had a years experience driving, i'll be fine in a 225bhp car' Hahahaha. You have no idea. You will put your foot down constantly and one day you'll do it in exactly the wrong situation and end up in a tree/in a ditch/killing a family. You think you're a good driver? You're not. Takes several years if experience and real professional training to be a decent defensive driver. Personally I am going on a course soon that is identical to what Class 1 police pursuit drivers take. Then I'll be some of they way there to becoming a good driver.
Unfortunately for you yanks your insurance is really cheap for anything at any age. This encourages the irresponsible mummies and daddies to get junior a fast car. Usually they end up wrecking it. Take a look at the statistics some time.
I was the same, I wanted a fast car. My dad said no and got me something more responsible, I hated him at first and then another friend of mine who got bought a Ford Focus ST (225bhp hatchback), went round a roundabout to quickly, hit a curb and flipped. Killing the 15 year old in the back.
Get a grip on reality dude.
