driving is my favorite thing to do and I do it a ton. be mindful of the speed limit, but prioritize a safe follow-distance and going with the flow of traffic. do over the shoulder looks when merging left or right instead of solely relying on mirrors.

I was like 22 when I finally got a license. Never needed one until then since I thought I'd live in NYC. Don't be nervous. It's not all that different from playing a videogame (a really chitty one where everyone is noob and literally out to kill you) in a sense. It takes practice and familiarity with the roads and with your vehicle. You should go drive with your friends and family to the store or to events to practice and get familiar with it. It will eventually become second nature. Eventually, you will discover the many joys of driving, such as people hopping lanes, slowing down by accidents, not signaling before changing lanes, driving the wrong way on a fking 1 way street, road raging idiots thinking you are following them when you are going the same way, and other pleasures of the road.

Drive a big car, and have lots of insurance.
I used to live in a University town, known for having the largest Chinese student community in the US. It was a mad house driving on campus, an area I tried to avoid. My understanding is many of the Chinese students hadn't driven before coming to the US, nor had licenses, but those details didn't hold them back from hitting the road.
Kind of chuckled at the story I was told of a professor driving a Chinese students to a town several hours away. the professor had developed a muscular disease and as a result was a notoriously terrible driving. She loved to drive though, and took all opportunities to do so when possible. She was driving the Chinese student on their long trip, then the student asked to use the bathroom. the professor pulled over at a rest stop. The Chinese student quickly jumped out of the car and ran away. The professor couldn't find her. Later on she learned the Chinese student was so afraid of the poor driving of the professor that she called another Chinese friend, that didn't have a license to come and pick her up.

I didn’t get my license until 21 and didn’t own a car until I was 24. I walked or took the bus everywhere and loved it. Nothing is more freeing than being able to move at your own pace on the two feet god gave you. I actually hate driving but unfortunately live in a suburban area now because the city is infested with criminals and homeless junkies nowadays. I miss living in the city tho. Urban living would be the GOAT if it was still safe.
