For me RPGs, where your decisions can change the story. Games like Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale, Witcher, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc.
What lead it was the Ultima VIII: Pagan and Ultima Underworld back in early 90s for PC. Was blown away at the interactiveness towards the world and story. Since then, I love these type of games.
Contenders:
RTS = WC 1-3, SC 1-2, Battle Realms
Fighting games from playing a lot of Street Fighters, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown on arcades in malls. Ah, the memories. lol

Probably same as OP. The game that turned me on to the decision making prowess was Ogre Battle 64, but from there KOTOR, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, Divinity, etc. Those style of games are probably up there as all timers.
To throw out a dark horse, not my favorite genre, but Strategy RPGs are amongst my favorite games now. Started with Shining Force (genesis) and just went from there. I beat Shining Force probably no lie 20-30 times as a kid, and then it evolved into Ogre Battle and now still with games like Fire Emblem Three Houses, Triangle Strategy, and despite my best efforts to think the animation and storyline are cheesy, I'm absolutely going to buy Unicorn Overlord.***Mariah Carey is my 10/10 Crew***

Same as OP. I love RPG games, and I'm not talking about these RPG/Pseudo rpg games where they just tack on a skill tree ... I'm talking builds, story choice/consequence, inventory management and worlds filled with lore and incredible dialogue.
Even though I've played RPG's before like Breath of Fire, FF10 ... I didn't really get into those games. My first proper foray into an RPG was Pokemon Yellow and from there I loved the whole systems of leveling up, choosing roles etc. After that what solidified my love for RPG's was the release of Oblivion and Mass Effect.
As far as CRPG's go ... I tried getting into Baldurs Gate but I couldnt, DA: Origins was the closest to a crpg, but it was really more action based on the console .... Divinity OS2 was probably the game that made me love CRPG's and havn't looked back since. Pretty fukkin happy that we're currently going through a CRPG renaissance, so many crpgs to play nowadays .... I'm eating good.Sig line can't be a novel

First time I really got into gaming, my dad got a family PC & older brother put Scorched Earth on there..played that with friends & family for months on end
Next was getting into cinematic puzzle mystery games like 7th guest
Then Warcraft 1,2, &3
Then finally after games like Wolfenstein, Dark Forces, Doom, & Halo my favorite became FPS.

Grew up on all the SNES RPGs. (FF2, FF3, Chrono trigger, Zelda LTTP, illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, 7th Saga, etc)
Every week would be a trip to blockbuster to rent a new game.
I remember borrowing the cartridge of Chrono Trigger from a childhood friend, and mistakenly erased his brother's 100% file. He was fcking pissed lol.--------------------- ϞϞ( ๑⚈ ․̫ ⚈๑). ---------------------

Can't decide between FPS, 3rd Person / Shooters, or RTS games. Also side scroller / platformers / beat'em ups are favorites also.
StarCraft (the original w/Brood War) is what got me into RTS.
3rd Person / Shooters, Gears, RE5, Tomb Raider 2013
Side Scrollers / Platformers, too many to list, but SMB, Sonic, Double Dragon, Final Fight, Nemesis / Gradius, Contra, etc.AP5 / PRO-Fap
