It finally happened, my sister got arrested for driving drunk

For the past five years or so, when I visit my sister and nephew she drives me to a bar and drinks for three hours, then drives us back. I don’t drink and have never had a license, so I can’t drive us.

We were celebrating her cousin’s birthday on the coast, and she left my 10 year old nephew in the motel room alone while she drove me to a bar. She had already been drinking when we played mini golf earlier, and at 11 pm Saturday night, she decided to get hammered at the bar. After she ordered and finished five or six drinks, I asked her to leave, and she refused. She drank about five more drinks after that; I can’t even guess the total amount of alcohol she drank.

Eventually the bartender kicked her out of the bar, and we went to the car and she tried to drive the wrong way down a one way street. We were instantly pulled over, it was a small coastal town with more cops on the street than civilians.

They could tell I didn’t drink, but arrested her and impounded her car, then drove me back to the motel. Those cops were cool for that, because it would have been a three mile walk. I told them the truth about her drinking, and didn’t pull any punches or lie to defend her.

My nephew’s grandmother picked us up the next morning, and drove us back to my place, then took my nephew back to his dad.

Was I in the wrong for not defending her to those cops? It was only a matter of time before something like this happened, I’ve been through this with her many times before but we got lucky until last night.

My nephew is safe, that’s the important thing.

She isn’t a responsible drinker, in my opinion she needs to be on probation and forced to attend mandatory 12 step meetings.

I probably would have defended her because if you are caught DUI you are pretty fuked already. No excuse for her behavior, but at the same time it seems like you were also enabling. I don't know how you can justify that one away.

She won’t listen to me when she’s drunk, I tried to talk her into calling an Uber or a cab, and she shined me on.

I have an Obama phone and I went a month without making a call, and they removed my ability to make phone calls. I can only use it to text.
