Those 31 years are gonna be a factor regardless of how great Tyson used to be.

As someone who has been boxing since he was 16 (11 years of on and off experience at this point) and has sparred tons of people from different age ranges, you are absolutely correct. I picked up boxing somewhat late as I came from a wrestling/bjj/kenpo background before getting into it. But once I started boxing that is where I directed the vast majority of my combat training focus.

Point being at my best I was/am a sparring partner for some lower level professionals and higher level amateurs that compete in golden gloves..and in these sessions I have my good and bad days with them. I am on par with them..which is also around the level I believe Jake Paul to be.

However even good former professionals I’ve gotten some work with doing body work and light sparring, there is a massive gap..people who I have no problem admitting in their prime had more skill than myself but simply can’t keep up with me if I decide to turn up the intensity at all..the difference in coordination, speed and timing are the biggest differences..but it does go beyond that as well. Even their cardio, ability to take shot, strength, etc are often noticeably worse.

When you are sparring active, young guys you become used to moving your feet and head very quickly. The older guys don’t have the hand speed to give you problems in comparison nor the reflexes/coordination to get out of the way of what you are throwing at them.

Now someone can say yeah but are those older guys you’ve sparred Mike Tyson? To which I will concede no they aren’t, however they are still younger than Tyson by a significant amount and when I watch Tyson train I see the same decaying in reflexes and skills I typically see in older fighters. Though credit to him he’s doing better than most his age.
