So I go to a gym that I used to go to last year for a change of scenery and do my usual leg routine. Extensions to warm up the knee from 40 to 80 then standing calf raises on the back of an incline bench; all the way up and all the way down for 15 reps. Then they have an old seated... hack squat machine.
The last time I was here, about 6 months ago, it was being repaired because the latch that holds the weight or safety was broken.
There was no sign and this machine really stretches the calves. So I started with 3 45s per side and worked my way up to 7 per side.
No brag.
I sit down and look at a girl and in seconds the thing crashes down to the lowest level with me pinned and knees in fkd up positions.
6 guys come running after they see what had happened, weight fell off the safety latch, and move me from under this awkward crushed position. I try to stand but the quads won't work and luckily a brain dr is near and takes over. He has me do exercises and asks about pain. No pain but swelling and quads twitching or jumping. He monitors me for 10 min and helps me stand. And I am able to with weakness on the left quad. I walk gingerly around and it feels like it will give out periodically. He then tells me to leave rest and take ibu every 6 hours, 3 pills and to hydrate.
Scary as chit and lucky that my legs are strong and thick. We will see what the night and day brings tomorrow.
As I leave I tell the management and they say that that machine should have a closed for repair sign on it and the guy is coming Thursday, eye roll.
The end.

Holy sh!t ben...that is seriously fuked up.... I hope everything heals up fast and painlessly for you.
Damn man...
Keep us updated, I hope not but I am guessing you may be feeling this one for a spell.
Don't hesitate to get it checked man... If there is any long term issues, these fukkers need to pay.. Sounds like negligence to me..

Holy cow that is horrible and scary!
They should be sued to pay any of your medical expenses and pain and suffering
" they say that that machine should have a closed for repair sign on it and the guy is coming Thursday, eye roll."
That's on them and putting members in danger should not be allowed.
I hope you feel better soon!Make It a Great Day! Just call me Dusty. It's a Clown 🤡 World out there.

This seems like something where it may take some time for you to be aware of an internal injury.
To protect yourself, jot down some notes now (and date them) with what happened, the prior repair, who was there, which gym staff said the above and who was present when it was said. There may also be security cam video of the incident that may only be stored for a limited period of time. In case you need them, other members’ memories might also have a similar expiration date.
Your membership agreement’s hold harmless provision likely excludes negligence or gross negligence by the gym, and if what you describe above is accurate, this may qualify for both.

Ben, the Hack Squat can be dangerous as it is, but there is no excuse for a gym to not have a sign that it is damaged and notification that the piece of equipment cannot be used. That is a basic rule for any gym. So, I agree with MT, it is negligence and if you have medical bills, you should see an attorney.

Thanks for the well wishes.
Today is 30 percent better but the quads look like swollen sausages above the knees.
I saw this look with a triceps tear in college
but that turned purple while this has not.
Walking this morning was tough but no falls from weakness. The side of the leg is the weak spot, occasionally it wants to give out.
A hot shower and massage gave the legs more flexibility and the ability to try stairs.
I will keep you posted. Here is what ithe machine looked like

Thanks, fist pump!
I call myself a Cyborg and this insane freak accident makes me mortal, lol.
The only thing that i can say is that the healing process is faster(yes i prayed) than i expected, so we will see by next Sunday.
To those that mentioned the Legal route, i will have to think about that........ but my first priority is returning my legs to OE.There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

At 55%, must be that Wolverine blood, minus the swelling and ice bags, Loool!
i can do stairs but the legs still look like sausages and a quad bruise appeared on the weaker leg(left).
i called corporate this morning and told them the long version of the story, and the GM of the club will be calling me today(24 hours)
i am shocked at my recovery speed given the severity(no brag) just happy.

I know gyms have us sign waivers, but there has to be something that we can legally do if we get hurt due to faulty equipment.

thanks guys.
Standing up from chairs and toilets(lol) and using the quads is tough when damaged like this.
They just want to give out at random times and you must push trough the discomfort to move around.
Imagene walking and your legs wobble like they are not keeping you in a fixed standing position; that is what this is like.
Sitting for too long is "no bueno" also, but thank god!!!!! nothing is really fkd up.There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

Particularly if you don’t live in a two-party consent state, assume your call may be recorded and that someone else may be present on the other side.
Don’t say anything more than you need to (for example, don’t say anything about checking out that girl seconds before the whole thing crashed). And don't agree to any offered resolution until you know the extent of your injuries.

it is slower but the range of motion is getting better, now i know Bando's frustration with his shoulder.
1 day you are a cyborg and then fragile.
Stairs are tough but i can now do them after several tests, but i need to use arms to assist.
