I used to just go ahead and throw an extra 10lb on that bad boy when I was strength training. I'd try to lift as heavy as possible as long as my reps didn't go down. If I got stuck, I'd back off a little bit and then start the process again the next week

How much weight do you add to the bar per week?

I only lift once every 6 days because I do other stuff and am old and need more recovery.
Squats I add 5 lbs every 3 weeks for 3 sets of 5.
The following week I go down to abut 75-80% of that amount and do 3 sets of 8/
The week after that I do about 85-90% for 3 sets of 6.
Then reset with 5 more for the sets of 5. So now all the other 8 and 6 ones will be adjust up accordingly as the 5 number goes up.
The hardest days are the 8's. its still heavy but I have to do more reps. I do this strategy for all my lifts. For deads its a 10lbs jump vs 5.
When they all fall due for 8's on the same workout its the toughest. Lots of sets of heavish weights. for me at least."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda
