I went last year and loved it. So much good food, good scenery, good people, good beer (omg the beer.....), good chocolate, good culture and history, good infrastructure. Just go, it's an incredible place.

One of the worst capital cities in Europe to visit. It has been romanticised in movies but is actually awful. Went a few years back and got caught in a protest turned riot and was tear gassed. Second time for work recently with a French colleague who said they feel unsafe in Paris everytime they go. Crime, immigrants, the smell, rudeness of the people in general, even worse when they realise you can't speak French. Everytime I got on the underground train they were giving us warnings on the overhead speaker of reports of pickpocketing. Once you've seen the Eiffel Tower in person leave asap and go somewhere else.

Other capitals are very touristic too obviously and there's a pretty big immigrant issue for most, but nowhere near as grotty as Paris.

Prague, Budapest, Lisbon, Berlin, Rome, Madrid/Barcelona much better.

Never been to Iceland, but Switzerland and Austria are paradise. I've been to France a couple of times and really the only part that I give a shiit about is Nice, Cannes, and Monaco. Being in those places is surreal.. like being in a James Bond movie.

Everybody "Ooooh's" and "Ahhhh's" over Paris though for some odd reason - and I get the feeling its because they think they're "supposed to" or something. But I thought it was filthy and overrated. Plus, get away from the touristy areas and it's really not much different from any big American city.
