    Great Video Payton

Tom I am done with go pro's, I won't buy another one. I just bought a cheap action cam and will be testing it out this spring, if it isn't good enough I will just buy a better action cam.

Howdy Mark, Yep, we only have black bears and a lot of them. if I am ever lucky enough to capture a bear in my travels I will post it.. I see them quite often but can't get them to pose for me, I need to find one with it's paws stuck in the mud lol Any more beavers or otters move in?

Steffo is not only a photographer, he is turning into Bill Nye the science guy.. Looking forward to the flower and bug pics my man.

Wow Payton, that is so professional. Thanks for sharing. And lol pockets, I think I've seen that science dude somewhere before. Still waiting for 2000 images to transfer over that just took so hoping for some good ones. I do fail on some series with this - everything is so weird and sometimes distorted and different at close up.

Payton, I enjoy your videos. Very educational and fun to watch. It has been a long time since I shot skeet. Lots of fun. Following up to shoot the fragments is awesome shooting and takes skill.

Is that an 1100 you are using or another brand?

MT, with the water high, that beaver has been hard to track or find. As I mentioned in an earlier post, he or she cam on-shore about 20 feet to take down a big Crepe Myrtle. I have put out my cam in several areas and some better areas have too much Poison Ivy and I keep grabbing on to it and getting it on my hands and it takes 2 weeks of misery to heal.

Supposed to rain tomorrow, so I'm going to refresh the culvert traps and see if that fuzz-face comes around. I'll keep you posted.

For full flowers, I think I prefer the look I got with the telephoto lens this summer compared to this detailed/scientific look. Maybe I went a bit overboard with the waterspray/droplets here.

Think I like the last 2 the best – a bit abstract and artsy I think.

steffo, beautiful. I like the detail and also landscape-type photos. To make both serves different purposes, which I think shows the ingredients of what makes nature beautiful.

I think the same - I kind of wanna see it all and get context to some pics. Think I will bring 2 cameras most of the time when out, so that ready for wildlife or landscape with one, and these small things with the other.

    Some good reading and viewing.

Still on my ride, I stopped to start a fire to warm up, cook up a moose burger, spark up a Joint and then back on the road for the hour and a half ride home.

Thanks, Tom. I think I like that same one best so far. Forgot to shoot one flower (Allium) I had bought, but too tired today. Hope it is still fresh tomorrow. Have a good evening all.

This may not be of interest to many but it is a total game changer for me and it is outdoor related so her it is.

I fish many different ways but one of my favourite is fishing from the bank of a lake. A nice comfy chair, a fire, some good food and some of the special herb and it is the best way to spend a day.

The problem is some of the best fishing locations are hard to reach by casting, so what I have done for decades is bring a boat, canoe, kayak or pack raft and go out to these locations, drop the lines and then head back to shore and do my thing, it worked.

Fast forward to last year, I bought a cheap drone that I attached a small hook on the bottom where I could attach my fishing line, fly it out to the desired location and drop it off. With my design I had to tilt the drone, fly backwards and the drop would take place. It worked but.

Fast forward to this year and I discovered this gadget that will fit on my better drone. DJI and no titling or flying backwards is needed and will give me a more accurate drop.

I tested it out this morning on the lake behind my place by flying it out over the frozen lake and doing some drops. I made a few small tweaks and it works wonderfully. Combining this technology along with lake depth maps, I can take a measurement of the distance required to reach the desired map location, fly the drone out that direction and exact distance which is shown on the drone app and bombs away. I also have saved many prime locations via GPS over the years so there is no guesswork.

If you told 6 year old me when I was headed fishing with a rod, few worms, thermos of kool-aid and a bologna sammich that I would be flying my lures and bait out to deeper waters and fishing like this years later.

I would have said Fukk off, you Crazy Bass Turd

Have a great day outdoor peeps..

I got this 250 gallon drum today for carrying water to the 1500 feet of drip tape in my pumpkin patch. It was free, but the valve is bungled up.

How would you make it operational?

It's been a few years but I have replaced a valve in one of those before. I think the entire valve cost less than 20 bucks if you are willing to throw a couple of bucks at it. Take it apart and have a look.
You can probably get a spigot adaptor for it pretty cheap too.

I got my parts from amazon.

Good suggestion from the Mountain Man. Replace the valve. You still win big.

From The Palmhose (Gothenburg) yesterday - put some more in the photo thread. Everything white seemed to almost blow out even though the rest was fine - never ran into this before. Maybe cause indoor and artificial lights around? Have no clue.

Mark, MT your help is needed.
The UK has applied (via the United Union of Nations) for an emergency mission for specialists sent to rid Cornwall of this menace. Please be on standby with bags packed at the door, your president will be in touch shortly. This was in yesterday's newspapers so no doubt you will be contacted any moment. Type any replies here very quietly, as the mission is still be secret. Bring the beaver traps!!

You may still be needed on this one Steffo, someone will have to do the photo journalism/reportage. Just worried that the beavers may be scared of your long lens and go into hiding

Again more great pics there!! The results are so good keeping depth of focus wondering why it's not more common than macro. How far back from the subject do you need to get? Can you use railings, monopod etc to be steady or is this only practical with a full tripod?

Liking that palm house, I often visit Kew Gardens (although the round trip takes me some time) haven't been there yet this year, must go!

Don't have any good photos, just a quick poor phone shot or two but I liked taking the kids there (when still young enough) as you can show them stuff like Bananas, Cocoa etc. This is probably going to get me banned from the thread (your pics too) because it's indoor not outdoors!

I may know a thing or two about beavers. It’s been my experience that length and girth excites them, some will say Dam and some will look the otter way but they all have a tendency to get wet. Happy Hunting and remember size matters!

What a weekend winter camping/ice fishing. We left Friday evening for an overnight of fishing burbot, the fishing was so good we decided to extend our stay. Didn’t get any burbot of any size 2 - 3 lbs average but they were pretty active throughout the night. Yesterday we fished lakers and did very well, again no monsters but plenty of action. They were in 70+ feet of water and boy were scrappy, last night the burbot were on fire again. Got home about an hour ago and I need a nap. ha ha

Thanks, Tom. These were regular shots (not macro) handheld and no accessories at all, although getting close-up at times with the macro lens. This Tamron 90 mm lens has very good image stabilization on its' own (and weatherproof) - so feel like one of my better purchases getting a used one for 300 usd or so. I never really had to think this much of aperture before since most things I shot before was pretty far away and I know how I like it with either telephoto on animals (mostly wide open f2.8-4.5) for a nice buttery background and letting in plently light, or closed down to about f11 for landscape which gets most things in focus.

But, with these flower shots it was different at that somewhat close range, indoor lightning etc. I did take the same shot at a few different apertures to see what comes out the best. If stop down to like f3-4, I often get great background, but I loose more of what is in focus compared to with a telephoto lens and the wildlife shots at the same aperture where most of the animal is still in focus, so I decided I like the f11 shots more this time of the flowers to get all of it in focus. It's a matter of taste and choice I suppose.

Stopping down like this may not be possible for everyone though, especially indoor...cause get so little light, but I am blessed with the Nikon D850 atm. Had I tried something similar on the D3400 I just sold it would have failed.

Made this easy on myself in a way I guess, cause using a 90 mm macro lens that is not only limited to macro distances but can work as a decent portait lens as well from normal working distance so you kind of get all the options with one lens there in that way.
And often these macro lenses are underpriced in a way cause built almost to optical perferctions cause they have to be and still in the same range as many other inferior ones.

The benefit of focus stacking around a hundred images for macro at really close up is that get all the detail of the subject and still blurred out/gone backgrounds cause only a fraction of a milimeter is in focus for each and you get no ******t light from the background really. The downside is that it's not very practical at times - having to set up for precise movements, lights etc. I'll keep trying various setups in order to get to some that I know will work and be practical enough for various scenarious, so I'm in a learning/testing phase for sure. Close up things turned out a lot more technical than expected. The other stuff seems easy in that respect, but still dependent on other things .

I did try to focus stack outside in a garden 2 days ago, but becuase windy conditions I failed. The good part was that I learned better how to use the tripod, and the extra arm I just got from China

I noticed I have to spread the tripod legs to the max to balance that...so will try another option soon that also ordered a few weeks ago - package just arrived.

Will try it with my gimbal somehow to keep the balance and not fall over due to the weight.

Googled Kew Gardens and the pics look amazing - you should go. Share some pics with us.

Edit: Ok, think I just ordered the last stuff I need to attempt the insect process. Phenol to prevent mold, a plastic box to work as rehydration chamber, and some cotton stuff to hold moisture.

Sorry for wall of text and thanks again for even looking at my stuff - feels nice to share and don't have any social media etc. Don't think it would matter much as I prefer a smaller circle of ppl anyways, lol.

I wondered the same and glad you're this perceptive. Not sure, but some ppl tend to stick to one tiny lane is my guess. I thought it was fun and something different to try the close up with the huge 500 mm lens on flowers this past summer and glad I did. They blow out more of the background, and get a different look. But no one recommends this, lol. and in my mind make it look closer to a painting and something you would want to put up on a wall. Was a foot to 5 ft away mostly here I think.

Hoping to grab the Tamron 85 mm for normal close up and portraits soon - has the highest sharpness rating for my camera (not macro though)

MT, sorry about the Burbot loss, but as always, you pivot to Lakers, which is what I would do. That trip with your friend sounds like fun.

Thomas, I am always on call for Beaver. BEAVER-911 is my phone number. MT has me on experience and vast numbers. You might have seen people in the South noodling for catfish. MT noodles for Beaver. That's how tough he is and the Indians taught him how to eat the liver straight after caught. That's a man.

It rained overnight, but not enough to get the water moving in the culvert, so no Beaver action. Whenever there is rain in the forecast, 80% of the time it goes around me.

    steffonolitus, awesome macro shots.

I hear you. Last 2 years we have experienced droughts. Never before. Around 2011, one of the largest public lakes around here went 15+ feet below normal. Docks dry with boats sitting on dry ground. It since came back, but it was scary. Our private lake is only 25 to 30 acres when full and we don't hunt ducks. We used to years ago, but not enough ducks and such a small area, we decided to make this a wildlife sanctuary. We have a lot of Wood Ducks now that breed here and some Mallards and Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks. I am sure there are several other species, but I can't get close enough to them. We just enjoy watching them fly and swim around the lake.

    Happy Chewsday Folks

On the trails today, started about 4 am and just stopped to spark up a fire and a joint, make some coffee and back to making tracks.

On Sunday a bunch of us got together for a St Paddy's party, I think half the town showed up. I cooked up over 10 lbs of burbot fillets and it was a big hit, even with the kids. We also had BBQ moose burgers and sausages. I think I gained 5 lbs in the last week. Burp!

Here's another trick you can do for the kids with frog legs... It creeps some adults out ha ha

To the waterfowl hunter, shooting a banded bird is a big deal. My FIL has shot several banded birds and he even shot one with a transmitter. IIRC, he received a certificate when he called in with the transmitter info (and may have even shipped the thing back to the appropriate authority). But I digress. Whenever I see a group of geese around here near parking lots, parks, etc. (are they still a "flock" even when on the ground), I always try to see if any are banded.

Banded geese are a lot more prevalent than you might think (or perhaps it appears so when the banded ones become resident, city dwellers). I know once I counted a dozen or so banded geese in this one area that were so thick with them that the local government got permission to thin them out in some manner.
