Say a subaru forester with 180 000 miles - how likely is it to be a sh*t box?

Get a carfax and look at it's history. Go to a Sabaru dealer and ask or an experienced master tech that has been inside and out of those go over it. Not a used car tech, like a lead tech in the main shop. Ask to speak to the tech. Don't settle for some fancy multip point inspection sheet the advisor gives you. Go on a test drive with him. Don't trust the selling parry talking about how they have their own inspection they guarantee.
When I worked at a dealer as a Nissan Master I just loved doing that, finding where some flipper or car lot tried to mask something.

It really depends on how it was taken care of. If it was taken care of well, it's a risk thats probably worth taking. I bought a 2012 Silverado that had 170k miles on it. I'm currently around 240k and haven't had any issues.
I bought a 2000 Silverado when I was in my 20s that had similar milage and the transmission went out. I don't think it was taken care of though.I'm 33 not 51

100% even more so because when you buy from a private party there are no consumer protections unless you can prove in court they committed fraud which is hard to do. Even if a car lot says as is, there are laws about federal emissions laws that apply, but private seller it really is "AS IS" and you are SOL if something is wrong.
Oh and if they are offended you'll get it checked, that's a red flag. If I was to sell you my car, I'd be like hell yeah that's smart

Non Japanese cars is pretty much asking for trouble. Korean cars pass only if they're within the last 10 years.
Land cruisers are infamous for lasting 1000000 kms. That's the only car anyone in outback Australia drives. All the country mechanics only have land cruiser parts.
Jeep and land rover is from the moment you put your key into the ignition.
German cars, non ford Americans, anything above 50k is asking for trouble.
Fords and nissans from 100 - 150k

Buying private party - be EXTRA cautious. Used car lots are sleazy as fuk, but the greed and deceit of the "I know what I have" dude selling his 2001 Camry on FB marketplace knows no limit

Fuark..... These days I'd say it's not worth it.
Due to hyperinflation people have been offloading absolute chit boxes for top dollar the last few years.
Check the Carfax, if the vehicle hasn't changed hands 3 times in the last 3 months, and the current owner is 70+ years old, you might be OK.Spoiler alert; you die at the end.

It's a gamble bro. I could sell you my 2013 Volkswagen Golf 2.5 with 185,000 km and it would last you at least another 100,000 km without major repairs because I took great care of it.
You could buy the same model, same year car with less mileage from someone else and have it blow up after a week because they didn't take care of it.Management Information Systems Crew

The very first reply ITT should've been not to buy a Subaru; they're absosloot garbage that throw main-bearings like ScapeGoat throws negs
Pretty much every make/model over the last 13 years has been a huge decrease in part(s) quality; all of the money you're paying is going towards body design R&D
Toyota have had a srs issue with hyugely consooming oil for 20 years now; always LOL when people talk about them as if they're bulletproof, they were in the 90's(like most cars were in prior decades)

Can't; OhPee lives in Kangaroo land
Brands & how they're assembled is entirely different down there
Volkswagen/Mercedes are fine if you don't mind paying 3x as much to service them & spending half an hour removing plastic covers to check your oil level
Who am I kidding no one can be bothered to check oil levels anymore, they just change their oil once per year like an idiot
Avoid BMW like the plague; Chinesium electronics*Tolerance is the lube that slides the dildo of dysfunction into the ass of civilized society*

All solid choices.
The newest Toyotas are chit, but still destroys non Japanese cars. Quality has gone down the board for everyone other than Korean cars and Mazda.
If you're aussie, listen to autoexpert on youtube, he's an Aussie guy with fantastic knowledge. His top 2 picks are Hyundai and Mazda. Newest kias are also excellent. If you feel homosexual and need an EV, the kona beats Tesla in literally every single metric possible.
