I went river rafting with a few friends the other day and was thinking about how exactly do people become river rafting instructors and have that as their sole career/source of income. Something similar would be tour guides, park rangers, receptionist at a ski resort - all just random jobs I thought of with limited upward mobility and a low income ceiling.
I guess not everyone has the means/desire to moneymaxx and statusmaxx?
Thought of this since everyone in my friend circle (along with their wives/gfs) all went to university and have jobs in tech, finance, accounting, medicine, marketing etc - all pretty standard conventional career paths

How do some people end up with “non conventional” jobs?

Oftentimes they are not their sole income source. Jobs like that can be seasonal, so they'll have a more regular job for a chunk of the year. Or working two jobs.
But yes, the big part is that jobs like this are a job of 'passion' rather than utility, and therefore they make less money. The job is their lifestyle though so they DGAF.MISC Haxball Crew

Luck, and I also believe some of them just took the risk and pursued what they found the most interesting over what's the most lucrative. Though I don't believe the reasons I listed as the sole reasons.

I spent 20 years in the Navy as a parachute rigger.
Cool job at the time but not to helpful afterwards."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda
