The reason the government would want to take away your guns is so that civilians cannot form a meaningful militia or resist martial law.



Imagine how difficult it would be to subjugate a 300M+ population country with even the largest army. Realistically you would need to go door to door on a semi regular basis to enforce oppressive policies and laws, and maintain military presence anywhere that the public may gather.

that scenario is 1000000x easier when you know the disgruntled citizens opening the door you're banging on for their weekly contraband check don't have a shotgun.
